1270 questions

I'm sure some of these questions have been answered elsewhere but i'm obviously no good at using the search feature. I am putting together a 1270 with JE 13:1 pistons, stock cams, full muzzys titanium pipe, pcIIIr, K&N's-yah I know everyone says they suck-, muzzys billet basket, heavy duty springs and ti retainers and adjustable cam sprockets. Anyway I am going to spray it and I have the muzzys stealth wet kit. I am gonna be running a .040 thousandths spacer plate in order to give JE some room to put some material on top of the piston. What I want to know is if anyone first off has a good 1270 map that I can start and break the bike in on until I can get a custom one made. I also want to know if anyone has some cam timing recommendations. And last but not least I wanted to know if anyone could give me an idea of how much ignition retard to run in relation to nitrous shot. I figured I would start with a 50 horse shot and then work up from there. JE is building the pistons to handle 150 horse but theres no way I am running that off of a starter button. Anyway I know there are alot of you guys on here that really seem to know your stuff and any help you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check with DWB, I built his motor and he had the same kit as you with the only difference being he had Weisco pistons. I will tell him that your asking.

I dont see the need for custom nitrous pistons and a spacer plate for a 1270 kit, even if you're gonna spray it. You can easily spray +100 rwhp on the standard 1270 package.

As long as you tune it right and mind the timing, forget the spacer. I'm sure one of the N2O heads around can tell you how much to back the timing down on the spray.

well, if he's gonna add .040 to the top of the piston; the spacer plate might be "useful", eh?

I appreciate all the help guys. JE suggested that I run the spacer plate just to be on the safe side. They said that the extra material above the ring pack will make the piston handle the extra abuse of the nos alot better. Madmike, I PMed DWB but I was wondering if you built his motor if you degreed the cams and if you did what you set them at. I dont really know where to start with the cam timing. Anyway, thanks again guys, any suggestions on who to ask about the nitrous timing retard?

with the spacer plate I'm still going up about a half a point in compression. I priced the muzzys kit but even with JE custom building the pistons with gaskets and the spacer plate I'm going to have almost exactly the same money in it going this route and it is better for my peice of mind. The way I figure it I havent played with nitrous alot yet so I figure that the extra meat on top of the piston cant be anything but good. Thanks again for all the help. Johnny cheese, I just happened to stumble across a post that said that you had a 1270 with a 150 horse shot on a progressive controller. How much were you retarding your timing with that combination. Thanks again.

Well sounds like you got it all figured out then, what are you asking advice for? Funny how so many people ask advice then do their own thing anyway regardless of the advice of people who have "been there, done that". The more complicated you make things, the more likely the failure. More often than not the simple idea is the best idea!! And it costs less and saves time too! Why do people insist on doing stuff the hard way!! WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER!

Just remember there is no "piece of mind" with nitrous!

I call it "the George factor". It works like this; A guy comes up to the professional whatever ( engine builder, machinist, whatever...) He says, "How do you think I should do X, I really don't know what to do. Please help me." Mr. Expert says, "OK here's the deal, do B and C but don't bother doing A."
Guy says, "Really? My neighbor, George says.............."

Sorry guys, dont mean to offend anyone. I am not asking advice on the piston and spacer plate deal, the pistons are already being made so it is a done deal. What I AM asking advice on is cam timing, a baseline pc3r map, and amount of ignition retard to run. I just told you guys what I have so far so that it would give you a better idea of what I was dealing with. When it comes right down to it most of the parts are already bought and in my garage. The pistons have been on order for a month now, and pretty much all I have to do is send the jug to be machined and start putting it together. I know you guys have alot more experience with this bike then I do and thats why I am asking you for baseline stuff. The way I figure it JE has been playing with pistons alot longer than me and so that makes them more likely to know what works and what doesnt. I didnt realize I was gonna get flamed for trying to get a little advice.

oof,
JE makes GREAT pistons, but just to be sure, you might want to assure that the quench ring is in the hole about .010" or a bit more at TDC, and clay the valve/piston clearance.

everything is probably fine, but it's worth checking.

AND
I would never disagree with MM or DM, but I do ask as many knowledgeable folks as possible before i decide on a course of action. Too many opinions; many of which apply to specific situations which aren't quite what you are doing. It seems you have to know 90% of the answer before you can even ask an intelligent question.

LOL, reminds me of a guy that rides with us. After the dealer told him that the 2000 upper would not fit his 1998 R1. He decided that the pic on eBay looked like it would fit so he bought it anyway.
