Car making U-Turn in apex of corner on Cherohala Skyway claims a life

A vehicle attempting to perform a 'U' turn on the cherohala skyway took the life of a motorcyclist today. At about 1pm the car started a 3-point turn at the apex of a curve. The motorcyclist rounded the curve, and struck the car at the driver's side door.

Apparently she was killed instantly, or died shortly thereafter at the scene.

A criminal investigation was conducted, i'll attempt to determine the specifics of the case. But rumour has it alcohol was involved.

Lessons: The drivers in the USA are the worst in the world.....They are stupid, ignorant, selfish, inattentive, vindictive, uncaring, unwary, and untrained morons who lack the basic skill set required to pilot a vehicle safely in a foam-lined parking lot, much less on streets with actual traffic....

Also don't ride faster than you can see and stop....

On the yzf forums, I have learned that American drivers will do the following....(real stories)

1. park in middle of blind corner to throw trash over side of mountain
2. run stop signs without regard to traffic
3. attempt to push you off road
4. look right at you and STILL cut you off

i have learned from observing American drivers that:

1. they ahve no clue what lane to travel in
2. they ahve no clue how to maintain steady speed
3. they have no clue how to do more than one item at a time. they can stear, or they can shift gears, or they can press a pedal. Heaven help anyone within 10 feet of them if they attempt to throw eating, talking, farting, or adjusting radio in to the equation...
4. they have no clue that driving means DRIVING and not reading paper/notes/romance novels/stock quotes/watching DVD
5. they have no inkling of the purpose of the turn indicators
6. they have no earhtly clue that they need to dim their highbeams when they can SEE another vehicle's lamps
7. i could go on......and on and on and on and on.....

Ride safe out there people, the morons are behind the wheel, and they breed like rabbits on viagra....

I agree that there are a lot of dumbasses driving. I was there week before last and it could have been one of us that died on the cherahala.

My condolences to the riders family and friends.

First off I am sorry to hear about this and I hope the Idiots who did this Pay dearly... the worst part about this is that they will probably not... if your not a member of the AMA you should join, one of the things they do is help in lobbying so these people do not get off with a 5 dollar fine. my thoughts and prayers go out to to the rider and her family. godspeed...

I sure don't see it. I drive for a living and I could go on for hours about the stooooopid shit I see people doing every day.

By far the worst in the last couple of weeks was a Fast-N-Flatulant "racer" passed me in my rig and the truck in front of me. He cut back in to the right lane too soon, clipped the bumper of the truck and spun out. After two heavily loaded trucks tore up about 2 months worth of brakes and tires panic stopping to avoid his stupid ass, he jumped out of his car and said we came out of nowhere - he didn't see us. I wish we would have done more damage to his car, he deserved it.

Oh, and the officer that responded to the scene called him "an ignorant piece of shit". Loved that!

heh i AM from the USA, and in last 5 years i have driven 160000 miles or so (51 on bike, rest in the s10)

nothing to what greenglenn drives in prolly 3 or 4 months....

but still

there are some good drivers out there....and every once in a while you'll see one

however my point was that you will ALWAYS find the worst ones where you least expect it....we are in america, i was sprta being specific.....but perhaps i should have said 'drivers' instead

our drivers do NOT have any training (high school driver's ed is NOT driver training), they do NOT get the consequences for poor driving that exist in many other places (a 4-time DUI offender should NEVER drive again....)

i have driven in puerto rico. they drive fast & VERY aggressive, but they maintain use of their signals, they FOLLOW traffic protocol, etc etc

i have ridden bus in hong kong. the drivers again use fullsignals, they drive following traffic protocols.....

in all the places i have been, and ridden or driven, no place has been quite like the USA for drivers and driving antics....
(losing license in HK was serious matter, they would have to spend over 2000 USD to regain their license....+insurance rate hike, +fines)

here you lose it and pay the license fee when it's all over....most places it is like 25 bux...or something similar....

sorry to have offended anyone....wasn't meant as personal, but as general......

don't know.. I live in Upsate NY and quite honestly people drive like Saints up here compared to other parts of the Country Like CA and FL.

Back in the day I also considered my high school driving ed class pretty darn good but maybe we just had a good program here.

Has anyone seen what it takes to get a licence in Europe, someplace like Germany. A hell of a lot more then what you require here in North America. North Americans believe it is there right to drive, including old people who can't see or hear, or kids, who have been in a couple of accidents but rich Mom and Dad get them another car because they are too fucking lazy to drive there kids around. If you can't drive, you shouldn't be aloud on the fucking road.

Hell, I've driven in a lot of countries.Lived in england for 7 1/2 years. Drove in scotland, wales, germany (autobahn too)holland, austria, switzerland,Korea for a year and egypt. The usa rates up there pretty high as far as most stupid fucks on the road goes. If I missspelled something or my composition is not correct please forgive me right after you go fuck yourself.
Most drivers in europe are very skilled and signal their intentions, but they have stupid fucks on the road too. Korea has a whole lot of idiots driving. Taxi and bus drivers are good.

I guess all those hours at the bus station has taught you other things besides "Fucky sucky five dolla".

Now on a more serious note, guys we really do have some awful drivers here in the US. I am certainly glad I don't live in a metropolitan area and have to deal with all the traffic. I have enough drama here with the cell phone using moms piloting the minivans.

SEPTEMBER 26: BULLETIN -- 2 DEAD ON FOOTHILLS PARKWAY -- A husband and wife riding a Goldwing were killed when a minivan swerved into their lane and hit them head-on about 3 pm. Several occupants in the van were injured. The accident is under investigation according to the National Park Service.

SEPTEMBER 25: BULLETIN -- TRAGEDY ON THE CHEROHALA -- Robyn McCrone, a friend of many riders in the area including Nancy and I and Ken Wheeler, was killed in a motorcycle vs car accident on the Cherohala Skyway in the early afternoon. Another motrocycle also hit the car and rider is in serious condition. The accident occurred near the 17 mile marker on the Tennessee side. One cycle hit the driver's side and the other cycle hit the passenger side. No charges have been filed according to Tennessee Highway Patrol. The details on this accident, including the name of the deceased, were obtained from the TNHP Public Information Officer. Robyn, a frequent rider with us at Sportbike Track Time, was from Ft. Lauderdale Florida and was riding with her husband Mark.

oddly i never see the european riders say 'watch out for the cages, they are out to get you" it seems to be a truly 'american' saying....

The sad part is the general public will say "See how dangerous those motorcycles are." Good thing truck drivers dont go about with disreguard squashing cars like cars squash bikes. But then again 99% of truck drivers are drivers, not just license holders. Just driving back from DG8 1100mi on the interstate and I could fill a page of idiotic stunts that were an immediate threat to us (be glad I cant type worth a damn or I'd be off on a rant). Funny thing is you can look at just about any vehicle while your out on the road and think...what is the absolute worst thing they could do right now...and you'll be amazed at how many times they do just that.

As for the tragedy on the Cherohala, like Harry said, we were just there. My wife was with us on the SV. Gives me shivers. All I can say is someone would've got their ass thrown off a mountain.

Godspeed Robyn.

You guys are correct the rules for shit like this needs to be more extreme! you know accidents in life happen. but if your a dumbshit like the guy who did the U-Turn, Serious actions need to happen to them!! like how about 1-5 years in prison, loss of license for 10 years..... etc... I really wish they would increase the fines for traffic items. and Slug I do agree with you about having to deal with bad drivers, I just thought you were slamming all americans. cool man...

you all just stating the obivous....sorry about the riders killed...condolences...

Having at least 5 (documented) "hit-&-run" accidents (cages vs. me/bike) ending w/broken bones, & countless dozens of other sideswipes/grazings/near-misses, perhaps I'm qualified for the following statement:

NOW, if the accident report above pisses you off; get off your dead butt & write your representative, several times. Get your friends to do same; get any rider that will listen to do same. The only way to make change is to force it; whining about it on a website does nothing really.....right? Write your congressman!!!!

If we do nothing to induce change, shame on us! Nothing will change until WE do something about it...

EBD: good point.

also join the AMA and support their efforts. currently they are attempting to introduce legislation that would make the penalties for killing motorcyclists more consistant with other VM punishments....

My favorite cager move of potential death recently witnessed in Atlanta, Georgia.
1. Do about 30 mph above the flow traffic in the right lane of a narrow, undivided, unrestricted 4 lane city street with parallel parking on both sides.
2. Move into the left lane to pass.
3. Return to the right lane.
4. Immediately slam on brakes.
5. When the front of of your Chevy Biscayne has reached maximum dive cut left with everything you've got.
6. Slide at forward to lateral ratio of 27:1.
7. Come to a stop when vehicle is occupying any three of the four lanes.
8. Adjust wheels to enter intersection from the right since you are now on a different vector.
9. Put on your right turn signal.
10. Proceed with the turn when on coming traffic allows. On coming traffic includes all four lanes but oddly everyone has stopped and courteously yields.

Hey this IS a great country. The driver was so bad nobody even honked or fingered. A true case of shock and awe.

Sounds like Korea...well they tend not to use signals. If they do it's the wrong one.
Nice place to visit (not necessarily to be stationed there), but driving is scary
