Chicago Sun-Times - Motorcyclists Organ Donors

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg labels motorcyclists as organ-donors

September 22, 2004 - If you believe Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg, motorcycle riders are pretty sure bets to become organ donors simply because they ride motorcycles.

As a motorcycle rider, you know that's not true. But if you're not a motorcyclist, like most of his readers, you may take the ill-informed comment to heart. What's worse, Steinberg thinks it's a joke.

In a column with the headline "Hop on a motorcycle, fill out your donor card," that appeared in the September 22 issue of the Chicago Sun-Times, Steinberg wrote: "Why are there many more heart transplants performed in the summer than in the winter?

"It's one of my favorite brain teasers, good to toss out at parties. It almost always stumps people." he wrote. "I like to give them a moment to think hard, squirm, then give up, before I spring the answer -- so obvious in retrospect:

"Motorcycles."

Steinberg goes on to say in his column that he has daydreamed about getting a motorcycle but abandons the thought when he thinks about hitting "the twig, or pothole, or whatever" that would "send me flipping into the guardrail, the flash of which would be my last sight on Earth."

Steinberg added: "Besides, there are already too many dumpy middle-aged guys racing on motorcycles, dreaming they're something they're not."

Outraged, AMA Public Information Director Tom Lindsay dashed off a quick e-mail to Steinberg to set him straight.

"Speaking on behalf of this nation's seven million motorcyclists, we found your characterization of motorcyclists-as-organ-donors insulting and ill-informed. Perhaps your intent was dark humor or tongue-in-cheek commentary -- but comments like yours are irresponsible and promote a malicious and unjustified bias against motorcyclists.

"Motorcyclists are doctors and lawyers, office staff and factory workers, and probably your colleagues at the Sun-Times. We're among the most safety-conscious motorists on America's highways," Lindsay wrote. "And while you're making light of the recent increase in fatalities, responsible motorcyclists -- and responsible journalists -- are joining us in an effort to reduce them.

"Please set the record straight with your readers. We look forward to reading your retraction."

Steinberg's response: "Thank you for your comment. There will be no retraction."

If you would like to let Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg know how you feel about his column, you may e-mail him at nsteinberg@suntimes.com.

Your article on motorcyclists let everyone who reads your paper know you are completely ignorant on the subject. Making fun of a group of people who enjoy the sport and number around seven million also shows your bad decision making skills to all.

It will be hard for anyone who reads your column to take it seriously from here on out.

Good move.

Geez and I thought the increase of available transplants was because Chicago has now become the murder capitol of the country. Like D.C., the former "title holder", no personally owned guns allowed. I guess no common sense is allowed either.

They boys of Back Marker Racing are proof of that point!!!

But what an asshole.

Maybe ALL folks that live in Chicago should be organ donors since perhaps they are more likely to get shot than die in a motorcycle wreck.

Here is what I got back from Neal, too funny!

Congratulations -- I think you're the first person to show such restraint.

I wish you had read the original piece. I like motorcycles. My point was I'd
love one, but I'd probably kill myself on it. I don't think that makes me a
bad guy. The idea of most motorcyclists driving dangerously, or it being a
"safe bet" that motorcyclists are organ donors does not appear in my column.
I never said that. It was made up by AMA publicist Tom Lindsay, I guess to
stir you guys up, though to what end I can't imagine.

Hop on a motorcycle, fill out your donor card

September 22, 2004

BY NEIL STEINBERG SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Opening shot

Why are there many more heart transplants performed in the summer than in the winter?

It's one of my favorite brain teasers, good to toss out at parties. It almost always stumps people. I like to give them a moment to think hard, squirm, then give up, before I spring the answer -- so obvious in retrospect:

Motorcycles.

You can't have heart transplants without donors, and motorcycles -- ridden in the summer but not in the winter -- are a great source of fresh, young, otherwise healthy organs.

Motorcycles are in the news. Another speeding maniac died in Chicago Monday, and officials say the death rate is up nationwide.

I can see why. Motorcycles have romantic appeal. Even supremely cautious guys like myself cast envious glances. Harley-Davidson motorcycles are beautiful. And like a lot of men, daydreaming as I shuffle through my numbing daily routine, the part of my brain that isn't already dead, but is desperately groping for some way to spice up what is left of my life, thinks: "I could buy a Harley.''

No sooner do I conjure up the image of Hog King Neil, racing his bike down the open road, "Born to Be Wild" blaring on my personal soundtrack, than it is replaced by the twig, or pothole, or whatever would send me flipping into the guardrail, the flash of which would be my last sight on Earth.

Besides, there are already too many dumpy middle-aged guys racing on motorcycles, dreaming they're something they're not.

This guy is just jumping on the band wagon right now. Once a week for the last month they have shown a wrecked bike and spoke about how dangerous motorcyclist are. The media here are like Pitbull's they grab shit and hold on forever. Pastor Elk, we are not the Murder Capitol of 2004 (Yet) Ney York and L.A. have us beat right not (as I sit with crossed fingers). It would be nice if Mike and his club the #1 Stunnas spoke out on this, other than the racing team and the parties they gotta do something.
