Selling my 12
This is not a bullshit thread, I'm really putting the 12 up for sale.
No offense guys (or gals ), but take a look at how old you all are and then look at me. I'm 20 insurance on the 12 for me is 250 a month. Between my payment and insurance I'll save 450 a month. I've got a beautiful girlfriend who's the most wonderful person I've ever met and we want to get married. I know what you all are thinking, that she put me up to this. She didn't though, she actually didn't want me to sell it but it's time for me to start looking at the big picture instead of just tomorrow.
I could never understand why my dad sold his '71 corvette convertable to buy furniture for the new house he and my mom built back in '77, but now I understand.
I realize I won't be able to climb onto the 12 when I'm bummin' and take it out for a spin and that I'll probably miss it when I see some squid blow by me on a 600 but this is the decision I've come to. After I hit 25 and my insurance goes down (a LOT) then maybe I'll get something, but being 20 years old and riding a 200 mph rice rocket in Wisconsin, things just aren't practicle.
I'm having surgery on my wrist and it will bother me even more after that than it does now. The riding position is torture on my piece of shit wrist and it will be even worse after the operation not to mention I live in Wisconsin where I can practically ride MAYBE 6 months out of the year. Paying 450 a month for something I can only ride half the time sucks.
I'm going to list it on Ebay and I'll be including my new Shoei RF-900 helmet and silver/black Tecknic riding jacket. I'll drop by from time to time and say hey.

Understandable Problem
Dude... at least get a more affordable, more comfortable (for your wrist) bike. Check on insurance for a ZRX 1100 or 1200. They are way cheaper than a 12R... sit more upright... and I bet the insurance would be a lot cheaper. That way you can at least keep riding! I just hate to see someone quit riding. My .02

Thats a shame that you have to sell the bike. As mentioned above a different bike might be the answer to saving a lot of money.
Sorry but this should go in the Classified Section.

...smart man...the big picture is always the best one to see...if you haven't already, I think you can get 'seasonal' insurance, no?...and a ZRX-1200...at any rate, heal well, be good to each other, and get another bike when you're good to go...and oh, another thing...an older rider with tons of points from tickets will pay as much or more than a young rider with no points...and I think I read a statistic that indicated that one of the highest numbers of wrecks or injuries or death occurs to riders over 40...must be all the NEW 40-something motorcyclists wishing they had done what you're doing once upon a time, but not having the cat-like reflexes of youth ...I may be wrong, but go figure...we must not be as resilient or heal as well as a young stud or studette...

selling the bike is not likely to be a big problem, but getting married at 20....
Been there, done that; and yeah I was wildly in love with the most wonderful girl in the world.
At the time, some ole fart told me not to do it... I didn't take his advice, I knew better. bahahahahahahahahahaha, oh well.
Congrats on your upcoming marriage, I wish you well, and I sincerely mean it

Dude, listen to these guys, ZRX is the ticket. It's still insured as a standard instead of a sportbike and its the ZX11 motorbasically(ZX11 cams drop right in the 1100). I've got both(ZX12 & ZRX), and as much as I hate to admit it, if one had to go it would be the Ninja. The ZRX stays. Check out http://zrxoa.org/ theres 3500+ members now. Got to the message boards and check the classifieds. You may be able to work a swap even. BTW, you coming to Road America? I got a buddy in Madison with a ZRX. Nice guy. Maybe you should look him up and ride over for the races.

That is a very mature choice you just made. I must commend you on it. Although it sucks that you will not be riding for awhile it is good to see at your age you can make very wise discions.

I agree...
... indeed, a very mature choice. If riding really was theraputic for, I also agree that you might look into something a little more within your current budget. If it's twisties you like, yuu'd be surprised what something like an SV650 can do. If it's gut wrenching accelleration, then the ZXR might be worth looking into.
Both are cheaper then the 12R, the insurance will be about a 1/3 of what your paying now and they are far more passenger friendly. ESPECIALLY the ZXR.
Still, like entropy, I too, was married at a young age. I had already lived in 3 mobile homes and a run down duplex, as well as a father... by the time I was your age. The 2 year difference between you and when I got married isn't as far as one would be lead to believe.
Though you have always showed a maturity well beyond your years, "marriage" is NOT a test one should take at the young age of 20. If it can be "avoided". I am by no means telling you that you shouldn't get married, but if it is "true and ever lasting" love, then it will be 2 years from now.
It's always amazed me on how quickly an "unexpected" pregnacy arrives to a newly married couple. Even when talking all the "precautions", the lil' rug rats always seem to pop up when least expected. I've seen it screw up a many of folks college and career ambitions when a child arrives.
Peoples' lives change from just gettin' by so they can go to school of a tech school... to workin' two or three jobs, just to by diapers and formula (yeah, we tried the "cloth diapers and breast feeding" thing too.). It's not like one plans it this way, but being married at a young age sure as hell increases the odds.
Still, I'm hardly one to be givin' ANY kind of advice on such matters. If it comes down to you selling you bike, DON'T be a stranger! You AND your future wife are STILL part of this family. Even if you don't get another bike.
If you don't keep droppin' by and postin' every once and a while, we'll all come over to your place and have a "Zone Party" and it will be "unexpected" TOO!

RedElk is right...hold off on the marriage. Myself at 20 and myself at 25 were two completely different people! You may feel you are *right* for each other now, but in reality you cant see the whole picture. Selling the bike is a sacrafice you may later regret, but these are things that should be considered BEFORE you purchase a vehicle.
I wish you the best, but keep in mind you are still a *child* and you should take full advantage of that. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your dilemma Silver and while it is a mature decision you may want think twice about the marraige. I am no one to you but 0's and 1's in cyberspace but 20 is awfully young for marrraige. put it on hold for a few years, it'll be worth it in the end. If not, then the best of luck to you and your bride to be.

Dude, shop around for insurance. I bought a new ZX-11 in 98 and I was 21 and paid $90 a month from State Farm. Then I bought a Busa in 2k and the insurance was $95 a month, I turned 25 in Sept of 01 and my insurance went down to $85. Thats with 1 $3500 bike wreck claim also. Shop around dude, keep your bike, you'll regret it.

Yes, watch out for # 1 FIRST....
I hate to sound OLD, but I have been there.
I was 18 in 1986, My ride was a 1986 GSXR-1100,
I let it go in '88 ( sold all of my stuff to follow a 17yr old girl across country.
In the mean time, I got my shit together, NO REALLY
got it together ( from just about rock bottom )
One thing I did discover in the 13yrs without a bike,
They have only gotten BETTER!!!

I got married at 22, to a girl I met at 21. Best move I ever made. Just make sure your compatible before you have any young 'uns. Not that I'm condoning divorce, I'm with sailusvi on the lifetime commitment, but kids really complicate things if it doesn't work out. Children can be a big stress if your not ready for it, Hell, even if you are.
At $3K yr for insurance, in two years your ins bills will equal the book value on your bike. In Wis, insurance isn't mandatory(unless the bank requires it). Run liability and save the rest in an account. If you don't use it for a crash, use it to trade up.
As for selling the bike, If I had to choose between having a bike in the garage or waking up next to my sweetie every morning... well, lets just say the blond is gonna win that one every time

Thanks for your concerns everyone, but we don't plan on getting married for at least a year and a half. I'm not heart broken about selling the 12, I'll have another one someday, who knows what they'll come out with by the time I turn 25, I'll ride again...Because the bike was financed, the bank required FULL coverage, I tried to run liability for a while but it didn't work. As far as having kids goes, we've agreed no ankle biters for at least 5 more years.

Silver, I am truly sorry to hear that you will be selling the 12.. But then again life is full of all sorts of speed bumps. I have read many of your posts in the past and you seem to be quite level headed. One thing that has been clear from your posts is that you have been looking for a change in your life. Now that the Marine option has been removed you have to make some big decisions concerning your future.
Now it looks as though you are focused on the new lady in your life, and I don't blame you... she is quite nice looking. Love is a wonderful thing, but remember it will not pay the bills.
Silver, take the intelligence that god has given you and focus on an education or skill that will support you and your wife to be. It is hard enough living alone and making ends meet, but add on a wife (even if she has a job) and all the expenses really start to add up.
I learned long ago that money will not make you happy, but if you don't have it you are miserable.. I can't tell you how many of my old friends started off madly in love.. but soon were in divorce court because of financial issues.
Do not let fate decide where your future may lead, go back to school and make your own future...
I hope you do not take offense to these remarks.. I really do wish you the best...
Good Luck

Hey SleezyRider....
Funny you should mention going back to school, that's another thing that I've got on my mind. Sandy is very understanding and she wants me to go back too. The only thing I'm stuck on at this point is what to go back for...That's just another thing that we'll add to the expense list. No offense taken at all man

Damn Silver, I have been in your shoes and prolly will be again someday the way the economy is going. I really think you have your shit together and will miss your posts so keep your word and come back to visit. If you can not get a cheaper street bike then get a good dirt bike and keep riding until you can get back to it.
After my divorce a few years ago I thought I would be without a bike for a few years, I had to sell my 9R and it killed me. A few months went by and I could afford a new 9R so I got one and then I upgraded to my 12 soon after that.
I understand fully and respect you for knowing what you need to do. Good luck and see you on a new ZX???? when you turn 25! Make sure to say good-by to ZTURB0 he may not be able to type due to arthritis in 5 years!!!!!!! the old fuck.
Alan
P.S. I broke my right wrist playing ice hockey and had 5 operations to fix it. I can ride my 12 for 300 miles and it just gets a little sore with a dull ache for a while. After your operation make sure you get back your range of motion as quickly as possible to 100% it may be tough but hang in there and it will all come together for you in the end.
