Nuttin quite like a well machined chunk o' metal. Either I gotta sell something or the Ol' Lady is gonna start working a street corner. Looks like more winter work on the 12.

Yeah, we're a little like that corner dope dealer, Huh?

I know that the price on something like that is a little daunting, and we know that is not a part for everyone. But, if you are going to build a serious engine (Big, Turbo, etc.) and must have reliability, parts like this are necessary. Keep in mind, saw one set of cases in half with a broken crank and you've just about spent that $4000.

There is a tremendous amount of engineering involved in producing a part like that. Just the drawings alone........
Plus we have to purchase a fairly large quantity of them to even get the price where it is.
They are pretty, though, aren't they.....

Oh yeah bad ass! Why is it so much more expensive than a crank for a car? More machining for the gears and such I understand but 4000.00 dollars! whew...
Also, will you have to add weight to make it balence with the 1270 pistons?

There are some examples of nice machine work that I could almost buy just as art (almost). Them there cranks are one of 'em. Maybe sit it on the fireplace mantel with it's own halogen spot. Hmmmmm

(Uh huh huh. I said crank.)

jessz1,
Two main reasons. One as you correctly note is the gear cutting and grinding. The other is quantity. I sought quotes from all the usual auto crank mfgrs, some of whom I've done business with before, and they took one look at the gears and said "no can do".

Jessz, I believe inline four cyclinders are balanced without the reciprocating weight added to the crank because of the layout or self canceling counterweights. Pretty cool, huh?
