A problem at Maxton this weekend!
I do not know if this was related to a tire problem related to speed, Valve Cap or Faulty Tire (either a cut or tear), but here it is!
I just received a phone call from my team mates at
maxton .................yesterday afternoon around 4:30 pm T.J
CANNON went down on a hyabusa motorcycle , apparently he went down
at the timing traps and it is speculated that his rear tire went
flat. T.J has ( according to my team mates ) at least a broken hand
and foot but news is sketchy to say the least .
dont take any of the details here as gospel but rather i am posting
here so anyone that wishes can say a little prayer for him and his
family.

Here is the latest Update from Scott Gutherie
"On the TJ Cannon question: TJ was clicking along pretty good on his (sponsered to him, not his own) Hayabusa, WITHOUT the fairing. The bike was seen by several people to go into a "wobble" just before the traps. Based on his previous times that day, TJ was probably going about 175 MPH when the wobble started.
The bike made a number of "gyrations", and then put TJ hard on the ground. The bike was a total, with BOTH wheels damaged badly enough that neither will hold air. The front wheel was broken completly off the bike, and was held by only the brake line.
My impression from the starting line was that TJ did an excellent job of riding, and that there was proably nothing he could have done to save himself at those speeds.
My personal experience is that the Hayabusa has rather different aerodynamics with the fairing removed. I rode two(2) Hayabusas without fairings on the same day as TJ's crash, and one bike wanted to wobble EVERY pass. And that bike is fit with two (count 'em -2) steering dampers.
At these elevated speeds, aerodynamics are not to be taken lightly.
TJ's father Jim (himself an experienced and knowledgable Maxton racer) told me Saturday night that TJ is doing well, with a broken bone in both a wrist and an ankle, with a LOT of road rash on his back, and a LOT of bruising.
TJ becomes the first, and only motorcycle land speed racer at Maxton to fall on the course while racing, and he "walked away." He also becomes one of the few people to crash at over 175 MPH and survive. "

Did his leathers come apart? and what were they? I will say a prayer for him and his family! glad to see he is ok!

Very glad he is going to be alright. It is amazing that he didn't get hurt more than what he did. Going down is always in the back of your mind when you are doing land speed racing.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. His leathers were loose fitting, not snug or tight like they should be. He is fine, aside from some road rash and broken bones. Thank God it wasn't worse.

i went and saw him last night
the doc kept him last night and was going to do some more blood
work today. He broke his foot in 3 spots and his hand in one.
The doc said maybe a few screws and pins in his foot and maybe his
hand. Tj was up walking around the halls, and watching some HP TV.
He is very eager to go home!

Vincent,
Thanks for the update. I guess we all think about the "What Ifs" when we run at Maxton or any other Land Speed event.
I hope for a speedy recovery, I'm sure he knows it could have been alot worse especially at those speeds. Remember last October when Chads coolant hose blew off at 209mph, whew....then Zack jumps on the bike and runs 208. It's one thing to run those speeds but another to sit and watch your sons! You'll be pacing for sure when Randall pulls the pin.
If all goes well, we'll see you in September.

will keep him in my prayers......hate to hear about stuff like this, but it kinda goes with the territory.....cant say too much for leather suits, espicially if you walk away from something like that, mine protected me at 150+ and I walked away with minimal bruising, and still wear the suit......

I will say it now! After everything that has happened (and Still Hapening "Just found that 2 of the wrist Pins were .866 as opposed to .827)) to keep me away from Maxton this weekend. I started to feel that maybe it was the Lords way to keep me from hurting myself either in a car accident (Holiday weekend) or maybe at Maxton. I put a not up to TJ that maybe he took my fall  I am also glad that this has finally happened (Someone falling off a Bike there at top speed )and that "WE" did not come out too bad. I now feel that the Percentage / Odds God has been paid and that it will be a while before this happens again.
Knowing that Randall is riding my bike, I have made changes that will help him a lot more than me mike shortening the wheelbase because on his last run, he spun the tire most of the run and was indicating over 200 in the lights while going actually 187 (Remember this was with 19 / 46 Gearing)

God really does work in strange ways. sometimes you want things to happen so bad you can taste it. and he dosent let it happen, some times it is some other persons time and some time it is just to protect you. A good friend of mine (redelk) told me something one time, and it really makes sense, Life is full of seconds and Inches! what inch you are at during which second of life you are in carries more weight then many can imagine! can you imagine if you would have put those wrist pins in???? you just taught me a valuable lesson, just by posting that. I have "never" checked any of my wrist pin diam....... I hope to race with you soon!

Thanks MM! When you get to be my age, you really start watching Everything as it goes together. I spent close to 3 hours with the rubber abrasive wheel rounding all of the sharp edges and then Jewlers Rouge and small buffing wheel to polish everything. Now I am sure that nothing on the piston will be glowing and set off pre-ignition (More than normal)
I am Anal Retentive when putting an engine together because I feel it is all of the little things that make all of the differences.

My Last post on this subject are the words from the "Man" Himself!
"Hey guys, this is TJ, i just joined this group and as i was reading
all the messages i just wanted to say thanks to everybody that was
concerned, to those that visited me in the hospital and to everyone
that pitched in at the track. Just to let you know im in 2 casts
now,
one on my hand that will be on for 4 weeks and one on my leg for 6 to
8 weeks, which means i should be able to race at the september meet,
although not on the busa.
I also saw that a lot of people were wondering about gloves and
leathers and whatnot. All of it did its job and i wouldnt be here
typing id it hadn't. The leathers were as about as plain of a set as
you can get, but they only rubbed through in one spot, but that was
mainly due to my boniness. As for gloves, they were a fairly nice
set
of Teknic racing gloves and they did great. One of my hands is
broken, but thats nothing any pair of gloves could have fixed.
Overall, considering i fell off at over 160, i am in great condition
and all the gear did its work. I dont think that anything could have
helped me turn out any better, but i know i could be a lot worse
