quarter gearing
Any advice on using a 16 on the front for 175 lb rider (without suit). Have been running 17/47 with a best of 9.2. Would like to try 16 something to see if its better. Keith

16t front are not really recommended, they put too much strain on the chain making such a tight loop. You're better off going up in the rear.

I've heard 16/44 works great as it's almost the same as 17/47 but it moves the axle to the very rear of the swingarm for a lil more wheelbase.
Actually, I think it was Zack who told me that.

16/44 is actually more like 17/48..but you get alot more wheelbase.

Actually, the 16-tooth in front isn't bad because it too tight of a loop on the chain. I've seen some old KZ drag bikes running 14-tooth fronts. The problem with the 16-toother front on the 12 is that the chain tends to wear down the swingarm guard....and eventually the swingarm if you let it go long enough.

OK - I think I'll try 17/48 first and see how I get on. I've got a longer arm so the wheelbase thing is not so relevant. Thanks for the input. Keith

16-44 gives you a 1/2 inch more wheelbase and still using the OEM chain!!!
Works great for me and I weigh 180 + leathers, boots, gloves, helmet...

Numbers aside, what you need to do is gear the bike to run across the line FOR YOU at the edge of the limiter in 5th gear. No gearing combo will be the same for every rider because of weight and ability, so gear it for this condition. Determine where you are at now, and make the necessary adjustments either on the front or back as needed.

Thanks Bergie - at 17/47 we're crossing the line at 11,000 in fourth. I'll go up a bit on the rear and see if there's an improvement in E.T's. Terminals are 149/150 in fourth. If you don't try it you'll never know. Keith
