Countershaft or Rear Sprocket
Ok I am deaf, dumb and full of attention , uh, uh, i cant pay attention to long stuff.
I have never changed a sprocket on a bike before, so need some advise. I want to gear my 00 12 down just a bit for some btm end. Now for the question( drum roll please), Is there an advantage of going down a tooth on the c.shaft, or going up a tooth on the rear sprocket. I know there is a cost difference, but anything else.
2. As i said above" I have never changed a spocket on Bike before" , How hard is it to change the C.S sprocket?
Nothing more humbling than throwing yourself to a pack of wolfs and hoping you will make it out with only a couple of scratches, lol

its easier to change the sprocket on the rear, I would go up 2 or 3 teeth on the back for everyday purposes....down 1 on the countershaft is about the same as up 3 on the rear....

Buy the ZX11"D" Countershaft sprocket! Then Spend $50 at Harbor Freight for an "Electric Impact gun and you are in business forever (Clutch basket, Car lug nuts! All of it!)

Going down 1 in front, you will be good to go with the stock chain. I'm not all that sure that you will be able to go up 3 in the back without adding links to the chain.

you can go up 2 in the rear sprocket with no problem. I would put a 17 on the front .

for the record I have gone down one in the front. If I were to do it again I would have left ther front alone and gone up 2 in the rear. I dont have an impact wrench, and the only time I would ever use on is for the sprocket change, just seems like a waste to me, I am not mehanically inclined. If you are then do what Vince said.....

If you down one tooth on the front and up two on the back, the chain does not even need to be cut.

The tool will cost less than the rear sprocket will and you will have it for at least 20 years. The Bike?? Changing to the Billet basket is another good idea and the tool is necessary for that also!
I used my impact to build my Deck, raise and lower my bike on the lift, Lug nuts on the cars, Axle nuts on the BMW, Neat tool! Trust me that by just the front change, you can still peak at close to 180 and it will wheelie in 1st 2nd and 3rd easy! Also keep the chain stock. with an 18 on the front, 1 tooth in the rear is max.

If you change the countershaft sprocket don't put the bike in gear.If you use an impact you don't need to hold the rear brake.

Correctamundo! Actually I have it in Neutral and put my foot under the rear tire and the impact does the rest!

Well got it done tonight. Borrowed an impact, and it spun it right off. I did screw up and squish the damn washer putting it back on. Was able to fix it. definately a difference, especially hitting 3rd. Now its time to install my Scotts.
