HELP! Idle Problem... Hey guys, I have been a member only a little while and I haven't posted yet. I've enjoyed reading from everyone and I usually can figure most things out from there. However, I have a brand new 03...K&N filter, full muzzy exhaust and PCIIIr. My bike runs great, but at idle, it jumps up and down about 300-400rpms. If I adjust the idle screw up to about 1500rpms...it smooths out, but at correct idle 1000+/- 50 it jumps like a mother. I removed the filter and regeased them to ensure I had a good seal, but same result. Any ideas or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

That's a known problem with the Muzzy pipe on the 12r. I know the Akro pipe didn't do this, but maybe some of the guys who run Muzzy were able to tune it out with the PCIIIr. Hang around here for a little while and I'm sure someone with that combination will tell you if the problem was ever solved.

I know that when the 12R was new it was the topic of many discussions here. Try searching for "idle hunt". You'll probably find quite a few threads about it and how it was dealt with.

That stumble was all but completely take out of my bike by kcadby who works at SMW in Jax. He made a custom map for my bike, and did some tweaking and she runs almost as smooth as new, but lots stronger.....take the bike to a good shop and have it tuned for the mods you have made so fat...it will make a difference...

The larger primaries and collector of the Muzzy pipe lead to a loss of vacumn signal as compared to the stock exhaust system. What that means is that even at idle, your muzzy exhaust is breathing easier, with less backpressure. Kawasaki calculated the stock fuel map and ignition curves based on that stock amount of backpressure. The power commander can help alleviate that idle wobble with proper tuning.

Thats the characteristic of the Muzzy pipes!!!...Im sure nothing is wrong with your bike...I had a 2000 ZX12 with a Muzzy the idle and roughness at 2500,3500,4500,5000, drove me crazy!!!...I spent hours and hours with a PC3r trying to get it smooth and it still ran rough...
Now I have a 2002 ZX12 with an Akrapovic without a PC3r, now its smooth as silk...Very easy to hold a steady rpm now!!!
If it drives you crazy, then sell the pipe and get the Akrapovic...Just my .02 cents!!!

my idle hunt was really strong w/stock pipe....went to the Akro & it stopped....no pc3r, bike is stock excepting K&N's & a few other non-performance goodies (bling stuff.)
I'll get a pc3r someday....but right now the bike runs great so I see no real reason to get one....

Thanks for the Help! Thanks guys!!! I'm on the right track now. I called Brett @ProFlo, but he only has the jets. Since I am overseas, can anyone let me know where to find the rest of the parts? They have to ship to APO addresses. Thanks again!

Oh jeez.... no another "pilot jet" mod thread
Uh, try this... take it to a qualified tuner or learn to tune it yourself.
I had a Muzzy on 3 of my 12s and each one had a smooth idle.

TurboBlew...why don't you chill! This site is here for everyone to hopefully learn and understand their machine. What better way to do that then to learn from the people who have "been there done that"...but of course, you can't or haven't learned anything from anyone on this site...YOU KNOW IT ALL! Uh, try this...if you don't have anything helpful to post, then don't! WORKS FOR ME.

UH.... qualified tuner hard to find in my area..... Spent 200 bucks on a custom map done with exhaust sensor and bike runs great... Don't idle fer shit...
Tuners are much harder to find than you think.... Maybe your lucky in your neck of the woods and have a few... Wish we did...

Maybe someone will make some,"SMOG" cams for the 12 with a really lame profile so it idles smooth. .....It is hard to make something that screams at 12,000 rpm to idle smooth too, don't worry about it.

Now that's the kind of friendship and help I was looking for! Madmike...cams, yea that's the ticket! I got cams! (hehe), zx12girl...you're right, I have to have thicker skin and just strike back. Anyway, Thanks everyone!

I have a muzzy carbon exhaust on one of my 12's and I quite like the idle hunt. I have an akro on one of my other 12's and it idles smooth.

Here is what I think, the stock cams have excessive overlap causing the idle hunt/low vacuum etc..with a stock pipe the exhaust restriction helps cover up this problem,Some pipes also seem to idle smoother maybe because they have just a bit more backpressure than a, Say...Muzzy.

Reading back up this thread though I see that SWFT has already basically said the above, and I too believe you could help the problem with tuning but it will always "Cam out"

I have the Yosh and it has about a 200rpm hunt, I like it. Sounds mean. I am getting a custom map made ont he 6th of May, so we'll see if that takes it out or not. I hope not.

Otis, same here. About 200 rpm with my yosh. I like it. It doesnt always do it anymore. Not sence I removed the block shim, fly cut the pistons and advanced the intake cam. It has a little more compression and it seemed to smooth things out.
