What Tire size 180 or 200
Hey Guys,
It's been forever since I've been on this board. I've got a quick question. I'm at the point where I need another rear tire. I've been running the Pilot HPX 200 series. I remember a while back people talking about going to a 180 series on the rear and liking it better.
So here's my question, is it worth going to a 180 rear or should I keep the 200. My mostly ride on the street, with several spirited rides through the twisties.
Has anyone had any bad experiences with the 180?

The 180 and the 200 have the same profile. I hear the 190 is taller. Have you compared the 190 to the 180?

I've used 180,190 and 200. I like the 180 best as it handles better around twisties and it costs less! I'm on my 22 or 23rd rear tire. I like metzler M-1 sporttech the best for grip/value.

the 190 is actually shorter than the 180 or 200. The 180 and the 200 are pretty close to the same in heigth. For me, I deally I would run a 190/55, but there arent many tires out there that come in that size, and the ones that do, are very expensive comparatively speaking.
I get about 300 miles out of a rear. I use the M-1 as well with a 190 on the rear. I will go to a 180 the next time, or to a 190/55.

HDL.. do you mean 3,000??
Go with the 180 rear tire. The 200 mm just hangs off the edge of the wheel anyway.
I can cut 1.60 60ft times with a 180, so there is no loss of traction.

HA! I got 6400 out of my rear.... but as the shop was pulling it off, I noticed that it was paper thin in the center and the belts were coming through - DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME .

190 if you really lean it over. If you don't, then 180.
I've run out of sidewall on a 180 before. I don't recommend it.

Yeah,....
As much as I hate to admit it Jon, you're right. But unless you get a race-spec tire you get stuck with the 190/50. The straight buttah is a 190/55. But if you know the 180s limitations it is ok, and much easier to ride in the tight stuff vs. the 200 steamroller takeoffs. LOL

I've already been to the edges of my nice new 190's (one of my buddies made the comment after my first ride - WHOA I see you enjoy the corners )... AAAHHH what a nice set of tires they are! MUCH easier to dive into a corner than with the 200 hippo's. I haven't done the 180's yet, but I'm REALLY happy with the 190's. Almost make the bike feel 100 lbs lighter.

Yup. You can scrape the pegs on a 190 and still have tire left (or, enough to stay on the road!)

When you are scraping the pegs on a 12R you better know what it's saying...."I don't have much left, captain!"

I've never gotten the 200 all the way over. I typically get to within 1/4 - 1/8 of an inch from the edges. Wondering if I'd run the 180 out to the edge or worse....beyond.

My 190 has been to the edge - no peg scraping yet, but I think thats because it was done mostly on tight corners?

I have run to the edge of a 200 and on the 190. I have never used a 180 on the 12 before. I have never run off the edge of any tire on the 12, even up at the gap, or an a race track. I cant imagine me ever scraping the pegs, I think at that point I would be in troulbe on my 12. Touching pegs isnt difficult on the 600, but the 12 is another story. I guess I just dont like to push the big bitch that hard in tight stuff....

I run everything to the edge, but will admit that when running a 180 rear I rarely use up all my front tire. In fact the only ones I have been able to do that on are the Supercorsas. (when running 180 rears)

I never use all of the front on any bike that I ride, no matter what size rear I am using. The only time I came close was on the OEM BT014 on the front, but it was a 120/65 instead of a 120/70. I dont counter steer hard enough to push it like that, I lean my body more. I think it gives me a better feel of what the front is doing, and I really dont want to push the front hard enough to wash it out....

The 180 kinda has a sweet spot on it. The bike will just fall into corners (after riding a 200) close to the edge of the tire. The tire will tell you where it likes it. You have to push it kinda hard to get it over more, but you can sure do it.
Just listen to the bike.
I've used up the whole side of my front with the Diabolo Corsas and the 190.
