A little OT Auto Trans.

I made the mistake of putting a little Lucas Oil in the Auto trans on my 1985 Chevy Astro van. My wife who can really feel any HP loss told me that evening that the van had slowed down a little. A few days later, I could smell the trans Oil "Outside" the van. SO I dropped the pan and changed Oil and filter. The problem is, yopu can only get about 2/3's of the Oil that way and I did not want to go to a special place and have the oil changed 100%.

Thinking about this and looking at the shop manual, I decided to remove the bottom line to the Oil cooler (Inlet) and hook a hose up to it and put the hose in a clear bottle to watch the filling while the engine was running). I did this and filled the bottle, turned off the engine and dumped this and did it again and about a quart more came out. I then put in 3 quarts of new Oil (Mobil 1 SYN) and started the engine again and filled the bottle to the top. When I removed the hose, I could see clean oil coming out and hooked the line back up.

I filled the trans with 3 more quarts and moved it throught the gears to get oil pressure and then adjusted the oil to 3/4" from the top hot mark. This was the easiest I have ever changed the oil and the best removal of the old oil I have ever done! It is all good!

I would be calling Lucas and seeing if they know if the product you used is compatible with the seals in the tranny. My biggest concern would be either enbrittlement of, or swelling of the seals.

Hope it turns out ok for you Vincent.

It was the "Auto Trans" Oil additive. It was about as thick as STP! i got no more than 3 ot 4 Oz in it, but the trans really hated it. I plan to put something I have used in the past and had 0% problems "Smooth Seal" which is thin and makes the seals Plyable again. The Trans is "Original" and has 240,000 serious miles but I change the Oil at least every other year and replaced the Torque Converter and had the plate drilled to make it shift harder into 4th / overdrive. So no real complaints. I posted this so that anyone that wanted to make a 99% oil change would know how.

Vincent, I'm assuming you put the lucas additive in for a reason, if so, an old trick for trannys with worn seals that dont shift well and or slip, is to put a capfull or two of brake fluid (silicone) in the tranny.
The seals will swell from silicone and a slipping clutchpack or servo for the band will work normal again. This is a NOT a case of "if a little is good then a lot is better". Adding a half a bottle will ruin the seals from excessive swelling and you will need to replace all the seals in the tranny.
It wont work on servos that use square cut teflon seals. It wont help them.

Y2k, I really understand what you said. I have a very slight leak (Had new front and rear seals put in and real careful with the pan gasket, a non Corke one) and since the bottle holds a quart and I was not above the line, I just squeezed in a little and you could tell the difference right away to the "BAD".

You are talking about the Dot 5 as opposed to the Dot 4? Or any brake fluid will do this?
