External Oil Cooler

I have been pondering installing an oil cooler. Has anyone done this yet? I am trying to visualize where the return would go?

I think he's looking for an finned cooler, like one for an auto tranny on a car.

Yeah Swift i was thinking about adding a finned cooler. Because the point was made about the oil temp in the motor helping to add to heat dispursement issues. How would I do this?!

Run a Higher H2O content in your existing cooling system. Cooler running FI bikes make more power.

Make shure you use destilated H2O, no minerals.

Personally, I already tried running a H20/antifreeze mixture greater than 50/50 and that led to water boil and worse heat issues for ME! So I would like to add an external oil cooler(maybe) if that would help with some heat dispersement. I am trying to get all the difference that i can. Thanks

You could purchase on of our oil filter re-locator kits and put a cooler in the line from the engine to the filter housing. But as everyone hinting, you don't need an additional cooler. Just put the right mix into your stock cooling system, properly bleed it and your stock cooler works VERY well.

ra12r...What A/F Ratio's are you running? Lean engines run HOT!

I run a 1270 out here in AZ w/ no overheating issues.

I have noticed, on my bike(1380), once the oil gets really hot it stays hot. Long after the radiator temp comes back down to normal. I thought the lack of the external oil cooler was the main cause of the retained heat in the engine! I think an external cooler would help in cooling the engine(and clutch plates) back down. I never thought of the oil filter relocator angle though! I think I will try it this summer.

The motor doesn't run hot, it STAYS HOT. The motor actually runs between 8-9 oclock, but if you stop to get gas it is 11 to 12 oclock and flashing when you turn the key on. Then the bike is VERY HARD to start. So, I am thinking to improve the oil cooling system. My mix has been experimented with multiple combinations. 50/50 or 60/40 seems best water/coolant. I tried a coolant enhancer from Auto zone and it left a coat of white on the inside of all the passages. So I am NOT going to do that combo anymore. I didn't really notice much difference. I have also done some recent machining to the water passages, but I don't have the results yet.

So, "IF" someone was going to add an extra oil cooler, how would you do it???

Easiest way I could think of would be to add the muzzy oil filter relocation kit, then plumb a cooler inline to the return line.

ra12r....looks like you have a lean running engine. If your over 13.1, you will continue to have issues.

Looks like your cooling system is keeping up while it's running (flowing).

Cylinder temp looks to be Very high!

Have you checked A/F yet?

I bought a ZX11 oil cooler thru a salvage yard ($50), & it's been sitting on the bench forever as mine doesn't overheat...consistently 9-10 o'clock...

Fan runs sometimes on very hot days coming to stoplights, just as I come out of the twisties after riding hard. That Muzzy blade still puts out the big hot air blast out the side vents just like a champ!
