How much error is in a speedometer?

If the speedometer says you are going 180mph, how fast are you really going?

depends on alot of factors. u have stock gearing? stock tire size & brand? changing either makes a diff. a good rule of thumb for a bone stock bike would be in the 10% area. i think i measured mine (against a bored cop with radar) at about 7%.

On the dyno,(stock gearing, wheels) @ revlimit, speedo said 210 mph, Dyno said 194 mph which is about a .924 of my speedo's 210 mph.

Unless you get nabbed by state patrol...Then it reads 50mph slow.

"But officer, my speedo said 70 mph! No way was I going 120!"

Beans the easiest way to get an accurate speed.....velcro a GPS on the upper clamp and use it as a speedo, or atleast to check and see what the error is, the GPS is accurate to within 1/10th of a MPH.....dropping one tooth in the front and using a190 rear tire, my speedo reads 63 MPH when the GPS says 55 MPH....

Hold the speed steady when you do that. GPS speed may be accurate, but it's rate of change can't match what the bike can do. Run a steady speed for a minute, you'll have a good measurement.

right on with that Swft....takes my GPS about 10 seconds to update.....others vary...I run the GPS on my bike all the time....Mine gives me and averages speed top speed miles traveled, direction location and speed currently traveling....my GPS is my key chain for my bike, and it velcros right on the top triple clamp....
