Battery Keeps Dying HELP!!! Long story short... I jumped my bike with a car after leaving the bike sitting for a few weeks,
couldnt get it to start, went and bought a new battery, brand new battery wouldnt start the
bike, jumped that battery off ran fine for a couple of hours then whenever I turned it off I
couldnt get it to start again. Bought a 1.5 amp slow charger left battery on ALL NIGHT
started fine for a couple of days and now it wont start, it turns over a couple of times then
click click click... Also just FYI my Volt meter on the dash is still reading betwen 13.5 and
14.2 Volts while I am riding but as soon as I kill it it wont start back up, I have heard a
couple of things 1st that by jumping the battery with a car I couldve messed up the voltage
regulator or when I jumped the new battery I messed up the "memory" of the battery and
now it wont keep a charge any one experience this problem or have any ideas???

If the battery is good and fully charged it should measure 12.6 volts. When the engine is running the voltage should be between 14.2 and 15.2 volts, depending on engine speed and load, if the reg-rec is working correctly. Sounds like your reading is a bit low.
Have you got an alarm or anything taking current when the bike is parked? I use a smart charger on my bike, plugged in all the time when it's in the garage. This constantly measures battery volts and maintains the charge as required.

Wonder if he popped the diodes in the charging system when he jumped it with the car? Hell, I've had bikes sit for *months* and still start just fine...

BM14,
I'm not sure about this one but doesn't Kawasaki cover the bike's battery 100% the first year? I agree with swft I've had my bike sit for 45 days and she started right up, the age of the battery was about 9 months. I'd send this problem to Kawasaki.

Check your grounds. Common problem where battery grounds to the frame, may be loose, or insulated from good contact by paint. Mine had similar problem, but the cables were loose at the battery.

A battey can show voltage and not have any amperage. The alt on the bike is not built to charge a battery only to keep it peak charged. Whenever you buy a new battery you should always trikle charge it for at least 24 hours before installing it in the bike. Check all your connections and see if any are loose. It sounds like the alt is not getting a good connection and it's not keeping the batt peaked. If it starts for acouple days then dies your probaly just working off battery alone.

Update: Last Night I put the battery on a 1.5 amp slow charger all night went out today and it wouldnt start turned over twice then click click click pulled battery check connections retightened and broke the nut off in the frame that holds the ground wire to the frame, no big deal just grounded it in a close by frame hole (yes I made sure all the paint was scraped down to bear metal) tightened all connections still wouldnt start, How can I test the reg rec and the stator to see if they are working correctly?

I'll tell ya what i done one time...it's a little ghetto fablous.... i took some 8ga wire and taped it to the battery connections on my old zx11 just enough to extend them to a car battery i had sitting on the floor next to the bike. I made sure it was a good battery and the bike fired right up. After that, i replaced the stock battery after sitting on a trickle charger for acouple days and found the battery was bad. The zx11 was awhole nother bike...not sure about the 14.

you should be able to test it like car charging system .... Get the bike running and warmed up ...Next while running pull the ground lose at the frame....The bike should stay running.......If it doesn't the volt regulator or rectifier or stator is the next place to look for a problem.. Stator can be checked with an ohm meter.....You can also test the rectifier to see if it has an open Diode .....You will need a service manual to find the correct wires and values to test... I would start off with something simple like check the conectors in the tail to see if any might be lose... The rectifier is in the right hand tail... Wires for the stator plug in around the lower part of the injectors if i remember right..... Last thing i would ask you is did you do anything to the bike like a p/c or alarm ...header install ??? If you did the of thumb always go back to the last thing you did and look for a problem ..Smokin

I have had it 8 months so it might be under warranty but Kawisaki warranty SUXXX... Actually Smokiin I had just reinstalled the Ceramic coated SMEG and then I tried to fire it up and it wouldnt start, what could I have messed up installing the headers?

Just a thought, you said the brand new battery wouldn't start the bike either. Charge it up, take it to a battery shop and ask them to do a discharge test on it before you start ripping the bike apart. It could be faulty.

Is it possible htat the new battery was damaged from you jump starting it with a car ? Was the cage running when you jump started the bike ? Some motorcycle batteries can't handle a jump from a car.

What if anything did you remove to install the header?? If you removed the body panels to install the header maybe you pinched a wire causing a draw or short...Smokin..

hi
when you use a car battery to jump start a bike the negative lead must be to an earth on the bike and not the battery negative terminal otherwise a blown rectifier can be the result

Ya, maybe if you reverse the terminals, otherwise there's no problem jump starting a bike battery using a (12 volt) car or truck battery. Don't know where you get this shit from...or do you just make it up as you go?
BM, you need to perform a load test on both the battery and the bike. To do that, you'd need to have the proper equipment. I'd suggest going to your local battery specialist and having them check it, or just visit the bike dealer as it's under warranty. Battery shop will be faster though. I'd bet you just have a loose ground connection between the battery and the frame.

Take the ground wire off from the battery. Get a test light and connect it between the ground cable and the ground post on the battery. Do this with the key OFF. If the light comes on, you have a current draw somewhere. Hope this helps.
