Yamaha Updates MT-09 and MT-10 SP, Adds New Sport Heritage Model

Yamaha's MT-09 gets a bunch of styling updates and the addition of a couple performance parts as well. The MT-10 gets an SP model which adds upgraded Ohlins suspension. The new Sport Heritage SCR950 provides something for those looking for an "iconic street scrambler". And Yamaha continues to tease us with an R model release.

Yamaha says:

MT-09

Launched to universal acclaim, the MT-09 has become the naked bike against which all others are judged. Powerful and agile, innovative and exciting, this game-changing model has shaken up the world of motorcycling. Having powered to the top of the sales charts all over Europe, the MT-09 has become one of Yamaha's best selling motorcycles but also helped to take Yamaha to the number 1 position in Europe since the end of 2015.

For 2017 Yamaha's designers have created an even more dynamic look for this trend setting Hyper Naked, while also enhancing its performance potential and thrill factor. With its aggressive new styling and enhanced technology, the new MT-09 continues to push the boundaries and inspire and excite every thrill seeking rider.

New MT-09: Eyes of Darkness
The Dark Side of Japan never sleeps. Hidden by the infinite darkness, a dynamic force has evolved. With both of its eyes wide open, this seminal Hyper Naked is destined to see beyond the Dark Side of Japan. Featuring menacing new twin-eye LED headlights and a dynamic new style, as well as an A&S clutch and advanced electronics, the new MT-09 is ready to uphold the MT family's honour.

Aggressively styled twin-eye LED headlights

Influenced by the uncompromising image of the flagship MT-10, the radically styled face of the MT-09 features an aggressive new LED twin-eye headlight design that underlines this bike's forceful image as well as its compact and lightweight feel.

Each of the slanted twin-eye headlights is equipped with two LED bulbs, and the bold new face embraces the full width of the fork tubes, enhancing the bike's densely compacted form to create a menacing and uncompromising street presence.

To accentuate the MT-09's intimidating looks, a pair of slim position lights sit below the new twin-eye headlights - and a pair of sharp-looking winglets that follow the contours of the headlight assembly reinforces the charismatic new look.

For 2017 the multi-function instruments are moved closer to the new headlight assembly to create a more unified structure, and the turn signals are relocated next to the radiator.

Ultra-compact tail end

The new ultra-compact tail end design reinforces the MT-09's athletic Hyper Naked stance and enhances the bike's aggressive good looks. For 2017 the upwardly slanted subframe is shortened by 30mm, and to convey a feeling of lightness and agility, the shorter upswept tail cowl features new side grills.

To give this definitive Hyper Naked a distinctive and dynamic appearance, the bold tail end is equipped with a new integrated 3-dimensional LED taillight featuring a twin apex design that forms an 'M' shape when viewed from above.

The MT-09 is also equipped with a newly designed seat - which is flatter and 5mm higher than previously - and has been specifically shaped to enable the rider to hold their seating position during braking, cornering and acceleration.

Swingarm-mounted rear fender

To complement its shorter tail, the 2017 model is equipped with an all-new swingarm-mounted rear fender and licence plate holder featuring a single-sided lightweight forged aluminium stay. This MT-09 is the first Yamaha to benefit from this rear fender design, and when viewed from the rear or the side, the redesigned rear end gives a more compact and lightweight look that reinforces the feelings of torque and agility.

Sharper, stronger and more compact design

As well as developing a whole new expression for the new MT-09, Yamaha's designers have also carefully reworked a number of the key stylistic features in order to underline the bike's compact look and convey a strong impression of raw power.

New side fins are fitted to the radiator, and together with the larger tank-mounted air scoops they reinforce the MT-09's brutal good looks and add to the feeling of compactness and mechanical beauty that characterizes the Yamaha Hyper Naked range.

Assist & Slipper (A&S) clutch

One of the most important performance enhancing changes for the 2017 MT-09 is the adoption of a new A&S clutch that enhances the overall sport riding experience and delivers a number of real benefits to MT-09 riders.

Featuring specially designed assist and slipper cams as well as new springs with an optimized rate, the A&S clutch engages more solidly when pulling away from a standing start and during acceleration.

The most important feature of this clutch is that it helps to ensure stable chassis performance during heavy engine braking. By minimizing the unsettling effects caused by high levels of back torque and excessive engine braking, this new A&S clutch gives improved control and gentler handling characteristics when downshifting aggressively - and its 20% lighter lever load reduces rider effort.

Quick Shift System (QSS)

With its strong, linear torque, compact dimensions and agile chassis, the MT-09 is built to deliver the ultimate in riding excitement. For 2017 this game changing Hyper Naked model is equipped with a Quick Shift System (QSS), enabling riders to enjoy faster and smoother clutchless upshifts.

This new mechanism is the same as the design featured on the multi award-winning YZF-R1, and features a sensor on the shift rod that momentarily cancels drive torque when an upshift is detected, giving more efficient and exciting acceleration through the gears.

High specification front suspension

The new MT-09 is also equipped with a high specification front suspension system. Its inverted 41mm forks now feature a new compression damping adjuster in the left fork tube, while the existing rebound damping function is located in the right tube. By locating the compression and rebound mechanisms in separate forks tubes the flow rate of hydraulic oil can be optimized, giving greater adjustability and more consistent performance.

Restyled muffler

From the twin-eye headlights through to the radiator side fins and the compact tail, the 2017 MT-09 conveys a real sense of strength, compactness and agility. To underline Yamaha's attention to every detail, even the muffler receives a makeover for 2017, and features a flatter surface and a new end cap that contribute towards the MT-09's impression of condensed mass and mechanical beauty.

Compact and lightweight 850cc 3-cylinder engine

The MT-09's compact and lightweight 850cc 3-cylinder engine is the key element in making this Hyper Naked such an exciting and addictive motorcycle to ride. Equipped with forged pistons and offset cylinders, its special crossplane technology gives the MT-09 rider access to a wide band of raw and linear torque that is an essential part of this bike's thrilling and rewarding character. Equipped with a new A&S clutch and QSS, the 2017 MT-09 engine is fully EU4 compliant.

Enhanced range of Genuine Accessories

With its leading multi role potential, the MT-09 is one of the most versatile naked bikes in its class, and Yamaha will make a number of new and existing Genuine Accessories available for the 2017 MT-09.

All current and future Hyper Naked owners can build their virtual dream Yamaha online in the My Garage app. With the arrival of the new MT-09 in the market, customers can build their ultimate MT in stunning 360-degree 3D, using the wide range of newly developed and existing accessories.

For 2017 Yamaha are transferring the most advanced YZF-R1M supersport technology across to the Hyper Naked segment. Featuring Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS), Thin Film Transistor (TFT) instrumentation and dedicated colouring, the new MT-10 SP represents the ultimate expression of power, control and aggression.

Ultimate Hyper Naked technology
Following hot on the heels of the widely acclaimed MT-10 that has recently arrived in dealers' showrooms, Yamaha can announce the imminent arrival of the new MT-10 SP, the most sophisticated model in the 2017 Hyper Naked range. Equipped with Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS), the new MT-10 SP brings YZF-R1M technology to this category, enabling Hyper Naked riders to experience the ultimate in chassis performance.

Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS)

The MT-10 SP's electronic suspension is controlled by a Suspension Control Unit (SCU), which analyses data from a series of sensors that monitor the riding conditions. The SCU calculates the optimal compression and rebound damping settings for the prevailing conditions, and the system's stepping motors instantly make adjustments to achieve the optimal suspension set up.

By constantly monitoring conditions and adjusting the settings while the bike is moving, the exclusive Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS) gives the MT-10 SP rider access to the most technologically advanced electronic suspension to be featured on a Hyper Naked.

Thin Film Transistor (TFT) instrumentation

This new flagship of the Hyper Naked segment is equipped with high tech Thin Film Transistor (TFT) instrumentation that enables the rider to view and digest a wide of range information. This YZF-R1M type multi-function LCD meter gives a superior high definition display in full colour - and the rider can select dark or light backgrounds to suit daytime or nighttime riding.

Silver Blu Carbon colour scheme

To underline its exclusivity, the MT-10 SP is finished in a Silver Blu Carbon colour scheme that has been inspired by the limited edition YZF-R1M supersport. Featuring blue wheels, a black front fender, gold coloured forks and silver bodywork, the MT-10 SP leaves no doubt that this is the ultimate Yamaha Hyper Naked.

Sport Heritage SCR950

Yamaha's Sport Heritage models have truly captured the imagination of those riders who appreciate characterful motorcycles that combine authentic heritage with modern technology and timeless style.

Each one of these motorcycles has been developed using our 'Faster Sons' philosophy, in which we create exciting and individually styled bikes that pay homage to classic designs from our past while giving you modern performance and riding experience

For 2016 Yamaha are set to expand their highly successful Sport Heritage segment with the arrival of new SCR950, a stylish and purposeful looking V-twin that captures the timeless spirit of the iconic street scrambler.

Back in the 1960s the street scrambler was the bike of choice for those riders who wanted a simple, stylish and rugged motorcycle that could rip it up around the city as well as handle weekend blasts into the countryside. These bikes epitomized the free and easy spirit of that influential decade, and their soul lives on in the new SCR950.

Powered by a pulsating high-torque air-cooled V-twin engine that's fitted into a tubular steel chassis, this handsome new Yamaha street scrambler is aimed at today's generation of bikers who want a real motorcycle that is built for enjoyment.

Featuring wide, braced handlebars, aluminium rims and spoked wheels - as well as heavy-duty tyres and front fork boots - the new Yamaha SCR950 blends vintage cool with contemporary design and technology. A higher seat with a flat profile gives an elevated riding position with plenty of freedom of movement - and there's also a new larger 17-inch rear wheel that gives a higher riding position and increased ground clearance for an enhanced handling feeling.

SCR950 Product Overview

Air-cooled 60-degree V-twin engine

Featuring an all black finish, the compact 60-degree air-cooled V-twin engine produces a pulsating band of power with strong torque, making the SCR950 a great all round performer that's fun to ride in a variety of situations.

Its iconic V-twin layout underlines the SCR950s timeless retro looks, and on the inside this engine benefits from the very latest engineering. Equipped with lightweight forged pistons as well as an idealized crank mass and 4-valve heads with pent roof combustion chambers, this compact powerplant delivers 79.5 Nm (8.1 kg-m) of torque at just 3,000 rpm. This class leading torque output gives the SCR950 rider the ability to accelerate strongly in every gear from low rpm, making this V-twin street scrambler a great performer in typical stop-start urban environments.

Tubular steel scrambler frame

Just like the original 1960s street scramblers, the SCR950 is equipped with a black-painted steel double cradle frame that underlines the bike's authentic heritage and rugged good looks. The subframe is designed to accommodate the higher dual seat featuring a flat profile that gives a wide range of riding positions to suit everything from urban cruising through to fast highway blasting and weekend back roads riding.

Wrap-around 2-into-1 exhaust with upswept muffler

The SCR950's exhaust system features a 2-into-1 header pipe arrangement that flows into a short, upswept muffler that accentuates the bike's scrambler image. Fitted with a small heatshield and end cap, the muffler gives off a gutsy, low pitched exhaust note - and its integral 3-way catalytic converter clears EU4 emissions standards.

Scrambler design features

Street scramblers are all about simplicity, versatility and fun - and the SCR950's chassis has also been designed to deliver a comfortable and enjoyable riding experience. The wide handlebars feature a welded crossbar to underline the scrambler theme, and with a mildly backswept layout they give a relaxed and upright riding position together with a high degree of controllability.

The flangeless teardrop style fuel tank bears witness to the high build quality on this fashionable V-twin, and with a capacity of 13.2 litres it gives a useful riding range.

Aluminium rims and 17-inch rear wheel

The SCR950 is fitted with spoked wheels featuring aluminium rims - a must for any scrambler - and with their aggressive block pattern, the heavy-duty Bridgestone tyres are built to handle the street and the dirt. The SCR950 also benefits from a larger 17-inch spoked rear wheel, and this contributes towards achieving the higher 830mm seat height, and gives an enhanced handling feeling together with increased ground clearance

Smooth-action suspension

Equipped with 41mm tubes, the conventional front forks give 135mm of plush suspension action, and they feature durable rubber boots that keep dirt and dust out. At the back end the twin rear shocks feature piggyback reservoirs and the damping and spring settings have been set by the factory to offer 110mm of smooth and stable rear wheel movement.

Other notable features on this high torque urban scrambler include 298mm wave style front and rear discs, as well as a circular LCD speedometer with a smoked lens - and for added practicality the SCR950 is equipped with a storage compartment under the new flat dual seat.
