PK: What do you the night before a race?
LEE: last night we just went out for dinner, hung out and talked. Usually it's something pretty low - key. I don't drink over the course of the weekend, as far as alcohol or anything. At race events I try to keep a clear mind. I don't want to burn the midnight oil or anything. I try to stay rested and get back to the room fairly early and get some good rest. It's whole different from weekend to weekend, particularly when I come to a West Coast event. I live on the East Coast, so it is a little bit of an adjustment over the course of the weekend, to get used to the time change.
PK: Do you have a specific breakfast you eat before a race?
LEE: No, I don't have any superstitions. I am a BIG Starbucks fan. I like my coffee in the morning. Luckily here there was a Starbucks not far from where we were staying. There was one at Fontana as well. So, if there is someplace I can get a good coffee in the morning...that's the only thing I try to seek out as far as consistently, other than that there is nothing specific.
PK: What can your fans expect from you this weekend?
LEE: I struggled a bit through qualifying and stuff, so hopefully they expect me to just move forward during the race. I was able to move up quite a bit yesterday from where I was gridded, in the first Superbike race. Hopefully I will be able to get a little bit further up today. I qualified a little better for Superstock than I did in Superbike. But, there again I always want to finish higher than I qualified.
PK: Do you have any lucky charms?
Lee: You know the closest thing I have to a lucky charm I guess would be my daughter, Emma. I have a five year old little girl and that's the closest thing to a lucky charm I have.
PK: What do you like/dislike about Infineon raceway?
LEE: The only negative really is that there are some safety issues still. They have made some really good improvements over the years. The track gets safer and safer, but there are some places that are still a bit questionable here. So, that would be a negative. Other than that the only other negative is that I am a bit beat up after falling off at Fontana. So if you have to ride here injured it's a bit more work, cause the place is so physical and there is not much time to rest. When you're healthy on the other hand, if you are fit it can be a bonus cause you have an advantage over some of your competitors. That just depends on which side of the equation you are on. The place is very technical, very challenging, a lot of fun to ride, a lot of elevation change. For the most part I really enjoy being here, just the biggest thing consistently, and they keep working on it, is just making the place safer.
PK: If someone were to do a track day here for the first time, what advice would you give them?
LEE: Just take your time and don't be in too much of a hurry to get going fast. This place is hard to figure out, particularly if you were coming for the first time, and there is a lot of blind stuff. Just take your time and ease up to speed, don't be in too much of a rush.
PK: Your next race is at Pikes Peak in Colorado, how do you expect to do there?
LEE: It should be a pretty good weekend. Last year went fairly well there. It's a long race - the track is short. I think the Superbike race is either 47 or 48 laps. So, it is a long race. The distance is short, but there is just as many corners, just not much to speak of when it comes to straight a-ways - and that place is really hard on tires. If you can get a set up that will work for you, but conserves tires pretty well, particularly rears, you should have a good weekend there.
PK: Favorite pizza?
LEE: Pepperoni.
PK: Do you do any work with any charities?
LEE: Any of the Children's charities and also Cancer research. My father-in-law had a bit of a battle with Cancer. Right now he's come out ahead. So all the Cancer research and everybody that contributes to it definitely help.
Lee has 20 min to get into his suit and get on the grid. He is so calm and so friendly this close to a race. Wow, he has it all together !
