Vierge to start SanMarinoGP from the third row

A solid Qualifying session for Xavi Vierge at the Misano circuit today will see him start the Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini from the third row, in seventh, while PETRONAS Sprinta Racing team-mate Jake Dixon was 20th after rain fell at the end of Q1.

Vierge had a strong start to the first dry Moto2 session of the weekend, sitting second early on in FP3. He continued to improve his speed and ended the session sixth, with a 1min 37.373secs lap, and a place in Q2. Vierge had a drying track to contend with, after a brief rain shower ahead of his Qualifying session, but put in a series of strong laps. At the end of Q2 he held the seventh best lap – 1min 36.928secs –, which was also the exact same time as the sixth placed rider, and will see him line up on the third row of the grid.

After a strong start to FP3, which saw Dixon inside the top-ten, the Brit was unfortunate to miss out on a Q2 place by just 0.005secs. Showing good speed late on, setting a 1min 37.870secs, a Turn 4 crash in the final two minutes ended his session and left him 15th. Jake started Q1 fourth, before slipping to sixth at the midpoint with a 1min 38.769secs lap. With rain falling in the final moments, no rider could improve their time and Dixon will start tomorrow’s race 20th.

Warm Up for Vierge and Dixon will get underway at 9.10am local time (3.10pm MYT) tomorrow, with lights out for the 25-lap Moto2 race at 12.20pm local time (6.20pm MYT).

It has been a positive day. FP3 was our first session in dry conditions and I felt so good, because our pace was strong. The weather conditions were difficult in Q2 and we didn’t know until the very last moment if we needed to use rain tyres or slicks. In the end we could use the slicks and it was a positive session. Although it is a shame, because I lost a lot of time in the third sector on my fast lap and that potentially cost us a place on the front row. We have great pace though and I will try my best tomorrow to finish in the top positions.
