Vierge recovers to ninth in DohaGP

PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Xavi Vierge made an impressive comeback from 19th in the Moto2 race at Losail International Circuit today, to finish the DohaGP ninth. Unfortunately Jake Dixon’s race came to an end on Lap 13 after losing the front end of his bike.

A great start saw Vierge claim six places in the opening corners, which put him 13th at the end of the first lap. The Spaniard continued to make his way through the field and make it into the top-ten at the halfway point. Although his progress stalled in the second half of the 20-lap race, Xavi battled hard for position and was able to cross the line ninth – improving upon his starting grid spot by ten places.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the best of starts for team-mate Dixon, who lost five places off the line and found himself in tenth. Further trouble hit the Brit early on, which relegated him to 16th. Focusing on the task at hand, Jake started to make his way through the pack and was 13th on Lap 13. Unfortunately his race came to an early conclusion on that lap after losing the front end of his bike going into Turn 14, which resulted in him being collected by another rider.

Vierge and Dixon will now turn their attention to the third round of the 2021 season: the Grande Prémio de Portugal, which will be held at Portimão (16-18 April).

Xavi had a really good start and attacked really hard, fighting for sixth position. He did a really good race and showed a really good pace. He’s very happy as we found something this morning that has helped him and he has shown his speed. At the end of the day we are happy with this ninth position and the points.

It was a hard race for Jake who started fifth and didn’t have a good start, because he fell back by a long way on the first lap. It is not easy to come back from there, but he was in a group and was fighting for potentially a top-six finish. He struggled with the rear tyre though and it looked like he didn’t have a good feeling from the start. Then he crashed out and that’s not what we were looking for today. Luckily he isn’t injured but it was a hard race and it’s not good to come away with a DNF, we needed a solid result.
