Xavi Vierge ends Portugal Moto2 finale tenth

With the sun shining at Algarve International Circuit, PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Xavi Vierge ended the Grande Prémio de Portugal, the final Moto2 race of the season, tenth – his eighth top-ten finish of the year.

Vierge had a good start to the Moto2 finale, moving up into the top-ten in the opening corners from 13th on the grid. The Spaniard lost two places over the next two laps, but soon found his rhythm aboard the Triumph-powered Kalex and returned to the top-ten. After closing the gap to those riders ahead, Xavi moved into eighth on lap 13.

The next task for Vierge was to close the gap to the leading pack, which stood at 2.6secs. After reducing his deficit to just over a second, Xavi was forced to defend from those behind and found himself dropping back to tenth in the closing laps. The Spaniard battled hard to try and reclaim positions but was unable to move forward and crossed the line tenth. Xavi ends the 2020 Moto2 season 10th in the championship with 79 points.

Xavi and team-mate Jake Dixon (currently recovering from right wrist surgery), who both continue with PETRONAS Sprinta Racing next year, will now have time to rest before their focus shifts to the 2021 season.

It was a positive finish to the year for Xavi, in fact it’s been a good weekend. He had a tough time in Valencia, but he came back this weekend and did a great job. The team worked well and I think we’ve learned some things that we can take with us going into next season. We need to continue from where we are now as we start to think about 2021. The injury wasn’t easy for Xavi, and it did set us back a bit this year but in the end we finished in the top-ten. It wasn’t really what we were aiming for but we can see the potential.

Jake also did a good job this year and we can see the potential in the team as a whole, which will be very good for 2021. Thank you to everyone in Moto2 and I wish Jake a speedy recovery.
