Stop-start afternoon at Aragón for PETRONAS Sprinta Racing

With two red flags during the Moto2 FP2 session at MotorLand Aragón, PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s riders Gran Premio de Teruel got off to a disrupted start. Jake Dixon and Xavi Vierge ended the opening day seventh and 20th.

Staying at the sharp end of the timings throughout FP1, Dixon put in a solid performance to end the session fourth with a 1min 53.011secs lap. After the first red flag of FP2, the Brit immediately made his way into the top-three at the halfway mark, with a 1min 52.339secs lap. Jake was able to test the softer compound rear tyre for this weekend during the session but was unable to improve his time in the final nine minutes, after the second red flag, and finished the session, and the day, seventh.

After putting some solid runs in the first half of the session, Vierge chose to stay in the garage as the wind picked up. He ended FP1 with a best lap time of 1min 54.009secs, which placed him 24th. Feeling more comfortable on the bike following his injury picked up at the French GP, Xavi was able to test some improvements to his bike during FP2. He ended the session 19th with a 1min 52.925secs lap, which placed him 20th overall.

Tomorrow’s FP3 session for the Moto2 pair will begin at 11.55am local time (5.55pm MYT), with their Q1 session getting underway at 3.50pm local time (9.50pm MYT).

We have a new softer rear tyre compound this weekend so FP2 was about trying to understand if we can race with it, in addition to testing the usual bike improvements. I think we need to find a little bit more in terms of longevity of the tyre, but I feel like we’re working in a good way and the team are looking to see how we can make that extra step. The key thing this weekend is to finish the race again and rack up more experience because experience counts for everything. We’ve come so far in such a short space of time and I need to remember this. I’ve become unhappy with positions that I would have been very happy with at the beginning of the year! My main focus today was to try to understand the tyre, not one lap pace. Of course I want to be on the front two rows tomorrow, but the front three rows will be a good result. I feel like I can be fast so we’ll see what happens.
