Comment from Maverick Vinales after FP1 at the Aragon GP

2020-10-17 10:31
Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales had to tread carefully in the first free practice session of the Gran Premio de Aragón but put in a strong opening bid. He secured 1st place.

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP's Maverick Viñales got straight to work at a chilly and windy MotorLand Aragón track this morning. He ended the FP1 session leading an all-Yamaha top 3.

The start of MotoGP‘s FP1 was delayed by 30 minutes this morning due to the cool track conditions. Once the session got underway at 10:25am local time, Viñales was keen to get some laps in.

The Yamaha-man had to remain cautious as the cold temperatures meant grip levels were low. He loves MotorLand Aragón‘s lay-out, but it is dominated by left corners, meaning that especially the right-handers were extra tricky due to tyre temperature. However, the Spaniard made the most of his YZR-M1‘s ability to get heat into the tyres quickly, and with 15 minutes remaining, he dropped under the 1‘50s-mark. He set a fastest time of 1‘49.866s on lap 11/17. It kept him in first place with a 0.085s advantage over his closest rival.

The conditions were very difficult. It's very windy and cold, so it's hard to have good confidence in the front. But the bike is working well. I'm really happy. It's fantastic to ride the bike, and I have a good feeling out there, even while having to pay a lot of attention, especially in the right-side corners and a few hard-braking zones. So, we will try to be smart in the afternoon and set a good lap time to get a provisional place for Q2.
