Comments from Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP riders after FP1 at Austrian GP

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi have completed Free Practice 1 at the Spielberg Circuit (Austria) this morning, ending the session in 11th and 13th position respectively.



The Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team finished the first free practice in Spielberg this morning under ominous looking skies. FP1 was tenser than usual. With the weather conditions continuing to be a big question mark for the remainder of the weekend, many riders put in a time attack towards the end of the session to secure a place in the top 10. Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi finished in 11th and 13th place respectively.

Viñales had little time to work on his YZR-M1‘s set-up, as he had to put in a hot lap. He pushed hard in the final stages of the 45-minute session, but came just 0.026s short of a top-10 finish. He clocked the 11th fastest time, a 1‘24.779s on his penultimate lap, 0.586s from first.

Rossi too waited until the final stages of FP1 to put in his personal best lap. His fastest time set on lap 24/24 wasn‘t enough to stay in the top 10. After the chequered flag, that lap got cancelled. However, his earlier 1‘24.879s, produced on lap 22, kept him in 13th place, 0.686s from the top.

The feeling here is pretty similar to what I had in Brno, we have the same problems. But anyway, this was just FP1, and we still have many laps to do on the track. Now it's in our hands to improve. I'm going to give my all to collect the best data, and then we will see. Anyway, on track I felt really strong. Concerning my riding style, I felt that we're on point, and this is the most important thing. When we find the right setting, I think we will be there fighting at the front.

It's difficult, because we weren't able to stay in the top 10 this morning. As always there are many different riders and bikes that are very strong. We are close, we are not so far, but we have to work and improve different points. We will see, and we hope that this afternoon we can have another dry practice session.
