Monster Energy Supercross Historical Notes Package - Round 12 - Ford Field - Detroit, MI2017-03-24 20:14Monster Energy Supercross’ rich history in Detroit dates back 41 years to 1976 when the legendary Pontiac Silverdome hosted races for 29 seasons from ’76-’05. It was one of the first two stadiums to host multiple races in a season in 1977. Detroit’s storied legacy is highlighted by its distinction as being the host city with the longest tradition of hosting weekend doubleheaders over the course of 16 seasons from ’77-’93. The championship made the move to Ford Field in 2006 and raced there for three seasons before ending a six-year absence in “The Motor City” in 2014. In total, the 52 races held in Detroit are second only to Anaheim all time in supercross history. The track layouts inside Ford Field pay homage to Detroit’s supercross legacy by running into the stands, a tradition that helped make the sport’s races inside the Pontiac Silverdome iconic. 450SX Class Stats: Detroit 2016 Podium: Jason Anderson Marvin Musquin Ryan Dungey The first 450SX Class race held in Detroit was on March 27, 1976. Bob Hannah claimed nine Detroit wins during the doubleheader era at the Silverdome, which is the most for any rider at a single venue in supercross history. He also won six straight races there, tying Jeremy McGrath for the longest streak in one venue. James Stewart has won three of the six races held inside Ford Field. He won the first two races in ’06 & ’07 and also won the championship’s return in ’14. He’s the only multi-time winner at the venue. Last season Jason Anderson earned a controversial win in Detroit. He crossed the line in second but was awarded the victory after Ryan Dungey was penalized two positions for jumping through a cross flag. It was Husqvarna’s first Detroit win.
