POSITIVE PROGRESS FOR NORRODIN AND KORNFEIL ON DAY ONE AT SEPANG

The opening day of the Malaysian Grand Prix saw DRIVE M7 SIC Racing Team riders Adam Norrodin and Jakub Kornfeil complete a productive first day on track at Sepang.

Early morning rainfall saw the Moto3 field head out for first practice in mixed conditions. With sporadic damp patches around the 5.5km circuit, initial times were over ten seconds off the circuit record of 2’13.571, set last year.

On home ground, Adam Norrodin made an impressive start immediately launching himself into the top five along with team mate Jakub Kornfeil. Sticking to strategy and saving their best tyres, both riders were able to improve their pace but not position.

Testing the new asphalt for the first time in a fully wet afternoon practice, Norrodin and Kornfeil used their time wisely, collecting valuable data to improve their wet set-ups on board the Honda NSF 250RW.

“This first day has been quite challenging, especially with the weather. This morning we started on slicks but there were a lot of wet patches on track, so we were going ten to fifteen seconds slower than normal. Step by step it got dryer and I was always in the top five, which was good. Then in the end of FP1 we just kept the same tyre because we didn’t want to waste a medium compound tyre, which is why although I did some good laps and made more improvement we didn’t better our position. The second practice was completely wet so our goal was to make as many laps as possible to find the rhythm. Unfortunately when I came back to the box during the session, there was a problem with the bike, which the mechanics were unable to fix during the short time remaining. I went back out for only one flying lap but I still improved and went one second quicker than my previous lap. I’m happy for this but I’m also a little disappointed because I know if I could have had just one more lap I would have been around top thirteen at least. Nevertheless we know now what to do and that we can be competitive in the wet too.”

“I feel really good after today. This morning I was so nervous at first but I just told myself that it was better to stay calm and relax a little. At the beginning of FP1 we were so good but because we wanted to save our better tyres, our position at the end of the first session was not so high. I wasn’t worried though because this was part of our strategy. In FP2 I was happy because we were quite quick from the beginning. In the end I really pushed hard to improve but we lacked a little power due to the humidity. I still feel really good on the bike and I’m positive we can do much better tomorrow, even if it’s raining. Hopefully tomorrow we will have better conditions. We are always looking forward and will try to push more and more!”
