Yamaha Motor Racing Reconfirms Leading Role in Health & Safety and Environmental Management

Yamaha Motor Racing S.r.l. is proud to announce it is the first in the motorcycle racing industry to earn the renewal of the ANAB* accredited BS OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health & Safety Management System and the newly revised ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certifications from Intertek**.

Yamaha Motor Racing‘s continuous efforts to excel in both health & safety and environmentally responsible operations is a long-term project evolving from the conviction that health and safety are not an option but are a necessity. The journey towards achieving these milestones started in 2008 when the company decided to change the way it operated, focussing on a number of factors such as personnel training, the management of dangerous goods, safety procedures, recycling and the way the hospitality is constructed and dismantled. With its goals firmly set in 2009 it only took the organisation one year to be awarded the ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System certificate (2010). Further efforts to improve working practices led to the awarding of the BS OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health & Safety Management System certificate only three years later (2013).

Yamaha Motor Racing shared its experiences and practices with motorcycle racing‘s key bodies, including FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme / International Motorcycling Federation), IRTA (’The International Road Racing Teams Association‘) and Dorna Sports to help the entire paddock community make progress in their environmental and health & safety management. The organisation had both certificates renewed in 2014.

Now, two years later, Yamaha Motor Racing is proud to have both certificates renewed for a further three years, being the first in the motorcycle racing industry to achieve this new level of certification, ISO 14001:2015 with added focus on protecting the environment, environmental performance, life-cycle perspective, leadership and strategic environmental management. The improvements made in all aspects of Yamaha‘s MotoGP operations, including the collaborations with numerous partners and suppliers, have been instrumental in gaining the certificates.

Besides Yamaha Motor Racing and its partners‘ hands on approach to improve the health & safety and environmental management in the MotoGP paddock, they are also actively involved in the KISS Mugello initiative (Keep it Shiny and Sustainable). Both Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were part of this campaign's strategy from 2013 – 2016. The riders served as role models to encourage the spectators at the Italian Grand Prix to exhibit sustainable behaviour and keep the Mugello circuit clean and shiny both during and after the race weekend.

We are very proud to have successfully renewed both our certificates. This achievement is the result of hard work by everybody involved in Yamaha Motor Racing‘s operations, both team and corporate staff, and also those key partners that have worked hard with us since 2008 to make Yamaha Motor Racing a model for the whole industry. We truly believe that SAFETY IS NOT AN OPTION and we are working hard to ensure that we create the safest possible environment for our staff to operate within. We are also working hard to minimize our impact on the environment and work smarter to be even more effective in the future. We are proud to witness that many other circuits around the world have successfully developed their own KISS projects, following the first experience in Mugello back in 2013, including the “KISS Misano” project making its debut at the Marco Simoncelli Misano World Circuit in September 2016. The appreciation from FIM and UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) of our KISS program is encouraging our sport to promote positive actions by both the paddock community and the racing fans: it‘s important we all take responsibility for our footprint!

About Yamaha Motor Racing S.r.l.

Yamaha Factory Racing is Yamaha‘s wholly-owned full-Factory Team in MotoGP. The team was founded in 1999 following the retirement of Wayne Rainey, who had run a Factory-supported team in the 500cc class for the previous two years. A new company - Yamaha Motor Racing - was set up in the Netherlands to manage all but the technical side of Yamaha‘s international racing activities and to run the team.

In 2005 Yamaha Motor Racing as a company completed the move from the Netherlands in order to create a single Yamaha MotoGP European operation in Italy, strengthening and centralising the management of the team and all MotoGP operations.

Although responsibility for the technical aspects of MotoGP remains predominantly at Yamaha‘s MotoGP Group in Japan, a number of Japanese engineering staff complete the European MotoGP setup. The team is based in Gerno di Lesmo (Italy), close to Monza, as are the logistics and the engine management sectors. This facility was re-built during 2008 and a new, state-of-the-art facility was opened giving the team a superb new headquarters with all technical, logistical, managerial and communications departments under one roof.

At the beginning of 2014 Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica announced a new title sponsorship for the Yamaha team using their well-known Movistar brand. The two parties signed for an incredible five-year agreement, something unheard of in MotoGP.

Masahiko Nakajima is President of Yamaha Motor Racing S.r.l. and Lin Jarvis is Managing Director. The experienced Italian former rider Massimo Meregalli stepped over from managing the Yamaha World Superbike Team to become the Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director at the beginning of 2011.
