Drama & Action Strike in Austin as Kawasaki’s Bryan Smith wins the Inaugural X Games Flat Track

n Thursday night, X Games Austin 2015 kicked off with the first ever AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) Pro Flat Track event. Social media was buzzing for weeks leading up to the inaugural X Games Flat Track event and the racing did not disappoint. Kawasaki’s Bryan Smith made his charge to the front as soon as the gate dropped, putting himself into third place after Lap 1 and shortly after began battling for second place throughout the 20 lap main event. Smith held second place until the last lap when disaster struck the leader. A mechanical problem knocked the leader out of the competition, opening the door for Smith to take the lead and win his third straight race in similar fashion to his dramatic last lap pass in Sacramento’s GNC1 race last Saturday.

"I'm stoked right now," said Smith. "I was trying to ride smart and make sure of second place, when the leader had a problem. I've said it before, I would rather be lucky than good and tonight I was lucky to get the gold. My Kawasaki ran great and we put ourselves in position to win and capitalized when we needed to.

Sammy Halbert tucked in behind Smith on his Kawasaki EX650 to take the silver medal and give Kawasaki a 1-2 finish.

The track conditions didn’t make it easy for the racers tonight. The heavy amount of rain Texas has received in the last week made the 3/8 mile track rough and unpredictable.

Look to see Smith try and continue his win streak as the AMA GN1 flat track series slides through the city of Maryland at Hagerstown Speedway.
