Results World Superbike-Supersport, Magny Cours, France2014-10-05 13:40Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) and Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) swapped third place finishes at the 11th round of the FIM Superbike World Championship, with Jonathan posting third in race one and Leon repeating that feat in race two. After a weekend of practice and Superpole qualifying held in fully dry and often warm conditions, raceday dawned wet and cold and stayed that way throughout. The surface of the Magny Cours circuit was judged to be particularly slippery this year and several big names fell, including Jonathan, who was leading race two until the 11th lap. Because the races were wet they were cut in duration from their planned 21-lap distance to 19, and each event made it to a conclusion despite the conditions. In the opening race Jonathan, who had qualified third and started from the front row, could not quite stay on terms with the Aprilia duo of Sylvain Guintoli and Marco Melandri, with Guintoli the race one victor. Melandri and Guintoli swapped positions as they also headed up race two. Jonathan’s no score in race two came after a long period of front running but at turn three he lost traction and fell. He remounted but had to retire in the pits. Only 13 riders finished race two, from a starting grid of 27. Starting from his Superpole qualifying grid position of tenth Haslam finished race one in sixth place. In race two he battled his way through the field and after an audacious overtake on reigning world champion Tom Sykes on lap 18, Leon rode to a clear third place and his first podium for his Pata Honda team after almost two years of hard competition and frequent injury. Leon’s two strong finishes of sixth in race one and then his race two podium pushed him up to seventh in the championship rankings, with only the final round in Qatar left to run. The overall championship is still very much alive after Guintoli’s first and second place finishes put him within 12 points of long-time leader Sykes, who could only finish with two fourth places in the wet in France. Only those two riders are now in the title fight. The 12th and final round of the championship will take place at Losail in Qatar, with raceday on Sunday 2 November. VAN DER MARK ON THE PODIUM AGAIN New world Champion Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) scored his ninth podium of the year in the FIM Supersport World Championship with a second place at Magny Cours today, despite falling in the race and remounting. With the championship wrapped up last time out van der Mark was out to win another race but the wet Sunday conditions, after two days of dry in practice, saw Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki) take a great advantage in the lead of the race until he fell and had to retire. Van der Mark fell on lap seven and had to work his way back to second in a race that was red flagged after 12 laps when a trackside air fence barrier could not be re-inflated. The race was won by home rider Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta) with Roby Rolfo (Kawasaki) third. Imola race winner Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) was in the fight for a podium finish until the red flag intervened and he was classified fourth, only a fraction of a second from a top three place. He is also fourth overall in the championship fight. Ninth placed Ratthapark Wilairot (Core PTR Honda) was the only other Honda finisher in the top ten, in a race that saw 18 riders reach the early finish and many other riders fall due to the slippery circuit conditions. Luca Marconi (Lorini Honda) had a spectacular moment as his bike rear tyre slid then gripped, throwing him upwards, him but he regained control and finished the race in a more than creditable 11th. Young Aussie rider Matt Davies (AARK Racing Honda) scored three points for 13th place, while new WSS rider Martin Cardenas (CIA Insurance Honda) was run off track in a first corner melee and had to play catch up from that point on. He finished 16th and one place from a point. Valentin Debise (Com Plus SMS Racing Honda) placed 17th and Nacho Calero (CIA Insurance Honda) was the last rider home, one place behind Calero. Irishman Jack Kennedy (CIA Insurance Honda) was looking set for fourth place until he fell on lap seven and damaged his bike badly enough that he could not restart. Vladimir Leonov (Rivamoto Honda) and Alex Baldolini (Team Lorini Honda) also failed to finish the race. The Supersport championship culminates at Losail in Qatar, with the 11th round taking place on Sunday 2 November. HONDA RIDER COMMENTS: Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) Race result: 3rd / DNF Championship position: 4th “It’s been a day of two halves really. Race one went OK although I really struggled with the power character in the wet today. It seems like Magny-Cours has just got really slippery in recent years and today’s conditions really highlighted that problem. It was satisfying to get on the podium but I wanted to give a little bit more to try and win. So for race two my team gave me some good changes but we didn’t quite solve the problem. I was still struggling in some areas but I was able to get to the front and this time just stay in a really good rhythm. Unfortunately, from the data we can see that, in turn five and six, I went through on a closed throttle as opposed to partially opened, and that was enough to have the engine braking kick in and bring the rear round. It came round so fast, I had no chance to save it and it’s frustrating to get my first DNF of the year.” Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) Race result: 6th / 3rd Championship position: 7th “It’s been a tough two seasons, with a leg break last year and a few other problems I’ve been having, so a big thanks to the team, to Pata and to Honda who’ve stood by me. I’ve managed to repay them with a podium so I’m over the moon. We had our share of issues over the weekend, first in Superpole and in the second part of race one when I lost all straight-line grip. But the boys made some changes for race two and it was definitely a step forward, although I still suffered a bit in the same area. It was also quite difficult starting from the fourth row of the grid because I couldn’t really see anything for the first few laps. I was really happy to beat Tom (Sykes) in the end – it was one thing getting to him but quite another getting by. I was running out of laps though, so to get by him and then open a gap made me quite happy.” Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) Race result: 2nd Championship position: 1st - Champion “I am really happy to be on the podium because that was a really difficult race. I crashed quite badly this morning so I had to get some confidence back in the rain. The conditions were really tricky. I crashed out but I did not do anything strange I just lost the rear as I went to open the throttle. The bike was not really damaged so I got back on it quickly. A group of riders had passed me but I was faster and had much more confidence anyway. I just concentrated on getting away from them. The guys worked so hard to fix the bike and it was incredible today.” Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) Race result: 4th Championship position: 4th “Fourth place, considering I qualified in tenth, was not so bad but I was just waiting to the last three laps to attack for third, because the conditions of the race were quite difficult. You had to stay in the middle of the track and keep the bike upright. I have not been lucky in the last few races and I look forward to Qatar.” Jack Kennedy (CIA Insurance Honda) Race result: DNF Championship position: 11th “I had a big highside onto the back straight. I knew I could not catch the group in front because they were too far ahead, so I was just trying to manage the gap to the people behind me, which I was doing comfortably. I was in a rhythm and plugging away and out of nowhere, on a constant throttle, I had a massive highside. I had no chance to get back on it as the bodywork was hanging off it. It was like glass out there you did not know what it was going to do next.” Ratthapark Wilairot (Core PTR Honda) Race result: 9th Championship position: 12th "There were difficult conditions on raceday and I did not do good lap times but it was the first time in the rain at Magny Cours for me. My target was to finish the race and get some points and hope to be in the top ten. I tried to build speed but I think we need more set-up time on the rear. I got less feel as the race went on but the front was OK. The team helped me at this difficult race and we finished inside the top ten.” Matt Davies (AARK Honda) Race result: 13th Championship position: 28th “It was a tough race but I thought I could stay on and score a few points. I caught up to some guys in ninth and tenth then I made a mistake so then I said to myself that I knew I could score points and that I should just settle down and finish. I was alright at the end but it was tough in the first few laps with some guys falling down.” Martin Cardenas (CIA Insurance Honda) Race result: 16th Championship position: NA “I think two or three riders crashed on the start and I had to go straight at the first corner. From then I was last and just trying to make good consistent race at a good pace. It was too slippery and I ended up 16th, which was not so good a result. The race was finished for me on the first corner.
