Newly Crowned AMA Pro SuperBike Champ Josh Hayes Ends The 2014 Season With His 48th Career SuperBike Victory

A day after celebrating his fourth AMA Pro SuperBike Championship in the past five years, Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha’s Josh Hayes was determined to show why he is the dominant SuperBike rider in the U.S.

And he did just that. The man who had won 47 SuperBike races in just the past six years--and all of them aboard the Yamaha YZF-R1--added a 48th victory to his total, in Sunday’s Race 2 at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Josh got off to a great start in the race and was in the lead with Roger Hayden, Martin Cardenas, and Josh’s Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha teammate Cameron Beaubier close behind. On lap three of the contest, Josh had a bobble, which moved him back to third, and Cameron took the lead.

“The Mississippi Madman” fought back from his mistake and caught back up to Cameron. Then, on lap 10 of the 23-lap race, Cameron lost the front of his #2 R1 while leading Josh, and the tipover put Cameron out of the race.

“The race was definitely not as smooth as it looked, and with Cameron leading, I felt like I was losing ground,” commented Josh. “But I relaxed and just ran my race. I was running some pretty good lap times, and things were starting to come around. I’m gutted for Cam because I wasn’t sure that I could catch him, and I really wanted a Yamaha one-two. I’m glad to win this last race of the season, though, especially after winning the Championship yesterday. It’s been an awesome season, and I’m so lucky to be racing for Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha. Five straight Championships for Yamaha and the R1 is just amazing.”

For the season, Cameron won three SuperBike races and earned three pole positions, and he finished third in the points standings in his first year in SuperBike and on the Yamaha R1.
