NAGL BLOWS THEM AWAY IN BRAZIL

Honda World Motocross’ Max Nagl delivered the
team’s first Grand Prix victory in the FIM
Motocross World Championship since 2011 today by
dominating both motos at the sixteenth round of
seventeen in the 2014 contest. The German
completed the set on his works CRF450RW by
claiming Pole Position and then walking away from
the best of the premier class to win both motos
in hot sunshine at Trindade for the first ever
Grand Prix of Goias. It was the second visit by
the series to Brazil this year and Nagl timed his
revelation to perfection at an event heavily
backed by Honda Brazil. Antonio Cairoli (KTM)
would finish third overall to toast his sixth
consecutive World Championship in MXGP. Gautier
Paulin (Kawasaki) was second but it was Nagl who also made headlines.

Trindade is a new, purpose-built facility in
Goias state and close to the city of Goiânia;
site of three rounds of the FIM Road Racing World
Championship at the end of the 1980s. The
motocross circuit is west of the city and the red
dirt typical of the area was carved into a track
that was bumpy, fast and full of challenging jumps for the Grand Prix elite.

Nagl signalled his intent with a powerful start
and undisputed Pole Position, his third of the
year, on Saturday. On Sunday he dutifully
replayed the performance to win in one of the
most dominant outings seen this season to,
unchallenged and unmolested, by over ten seconds.
It was the third chequered flag for Nagl and the
CRF450RW in 2014. In the second moto he passed
Dean Ferris (Husqvarna) on the opening lap to
embark on another faultless ride and separated
himself from the pack to reach the finish line over thirteen seconds ahead.

Today was the German’s first Grand Prix triumph
since 2010 and first double since 2009. For the
elated HRC squad it was their first celebration
after Evgeny Bobryshev ruled the 2011 Grand Prix of Germany at Teutschenthal.

With a faultless haul of fifty points Nagl is now
seventh in the MXGP Championship standings. He
can rise to sixth if he betters Shaun Simpson
(KTM) by twenty-five points in Mexico. Team-mate
Bobryshev is still rehabilitating from the
injuries sustained at the Grand Prix of Italy
back in June and recently announced that he would
not be fit in time to represent his country at
the 68th Motocross of Nations in Latvia later
this month. The Russian is fourteenth in MXGP
despite missing seven rounds of the campaign.

In the MX2 class Tim Gasjer increased Honda’s joy
at Trindade by scoring his very first Grand Prix
moto victory with a win in the second race on the
CRF250RW. ‘243’ was able to ascend the podium for
the fifth time in 2014, with third place overall
after a fight back to seventh position in the
first moto following a crash that pushed him down
the order. The teenager initially suffered a
setback on Saturday when a fall and collision
with some trackside advertising led to an injured
left shoulder and the need for five stiches in a
small wound; hardly the best preparation for the
jumpy layout. The Slovenian ignored the pain to
impress - particularly in the second moto – and
he dashed away from a fight for second position
involving up to five different riders. Gajser is
now twenty-four points behind Dylan Ferrandis
(Kawasaki) and fourth place in the championship
(in his first year riding with the CRF) with one
round to go. Team-mate Kei Yamamoto bagged points
for finishes in fourteenth and fifteenth.

The MX2 category was won overall today by Romain
Febvre (Husqvarna) with Dylan Ferrandis ahead of Gajser in second place.

After six months, sixteen rounds and visits to
fourteen different countries the 2014 FIM
Motocross World Championship – the fifty-seventh
edition since the series’ inception in 1957 – now
arrives at its finale with the second ever Grand
Prix of Mexico at Leon next weekend.

“I just had a perfect day. I didn’t make any
mistakes, had perfect starts and could control
the races. Even with the heat I could make it
through. After Lommel [the last GP] we did a
great job because we went testing and improved
the bike a lot and that was shown by the good
starts and the overall performance. I also
benefitted from the long break from racing.
Physically I am much better again. From the
beginning of the weekend here we had a great
set-up and feeling and everything was going in a
good direction right from Saturday morning. I
think the track was better than in Europe where
we have so many classes and there are strange lines and bumps.”

Tim Gajser:

“It was really good to win that second moto. I
didn't have the best start and was in ninth place
but some other riders crashed and I made a few
passes to arrive at the front. I made a small gap
and could control the race from there. I’m really
happy because yesterday I had two nasty crashes
and I really didn’t expect to win today. I was in
a lot of pain but I never gave up.”
