FOURTH FOR NAGL IN SWEDEN AS GAJSER TAKES THIRD MX2 PODIUM

Honda World Motocross’ Max Nagl negotiated the
slick and slippery Uddevalla dirt to score fourth
position overall at the Grand Prix of Sweden, the
twelfth round of seventeen in the FIM Motocross
World Championship. HRC were pleased to see Honda
Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser take a third podium finish
of the season with the CRF250RW as the Slovenian
bagged third place in the MX2 class. The tight
layout located seventy kilometres north of the
city of Gothenburg was surrounded by 21,000
spectators who basked in an enjoyable early
summer climate. Despite several large
modifications to the old and traditional circuit
Uddevalla was still hard for overtaking with
close lap-times among the leaders.

The Grand Prix was the scene of the latest
success for Antonio Cairoli (KTM) – his
seventieth career win - with Jeremy Van Horebeek
(Yamaha) second and Kevin Strijbos (Suzuki)
joining the Belgian on the podium of the premier
MXGP class. MX2 was owned by World Champion
Jeffrey Herlings (KTM) as Jordi Tixier (KTM) also
scaled the rostrum with Gajser in attendance.

A start gate position, first corner, modified
jumps, an extended first turn and a reversed
trajectory were new hallmarks of Uddevalla for
2014. The Swedish ground however remained
frustrating and treacherous due to its stony
consistency. The dry weather further lowered the
technical demands and reduced the quantity and
frequency of ruts and bumps. However, where the
track was ‘carved’ some of the rough ground was brutal.

Two weeks after his triumphant return from wrist
injury Max Nagl was able to benefit from more
training and preparation time on the CRF450RW.
The German suffered a poor start in the first
moto that left him outside of the top ten and
with plenty of hard passing ahead. The former
world championship runner-up battled for several
laps with David Philippaerts (Yamaha) before then
drifting to a lonely ninth place. In the second
race a better getaway and feeling with the course
allowed him to defend a decent third place from
Strijbos and post his second top three result in
four motos. His haul of thirty-two points
delivered fourth position overall and nudged him
one position up to seventh in the MXGP Championship standings.

Tim Gajser is still sixth in the MX2 points table
after spraying champagne for the third time this
year. The teenager was excellent in his pursuit
of Romain Febvre (Husqvarna) for second position
in the first moto and duly seized the slot after
the Frenchman committed an error. Gasjer used his
CRF250RW to full advantage across the lines and
ruts, turning and correcting his path at will and
continuing the search for optimum grip. He was
sixth in the second moto after a lacklustre break
from the gate and a frantic battle with five
other riders in the second half of the top ten.
His work across the thirty minute and two lap
sprint was good enough for another set of silverware.

Team-mate Kei Yamamoto returned from his back
injury to grab three points for seventeenth place in the second MX2 outing.

Round thirteen of the FIM Motocross World
Championship will take place next weekend in the
narrow sand of Hyvinkaa for the Grand Prix of Finland.

Max Nagl:

“I was struggling all weekend with the track. The
ground was similar to Arco di Trento [site of the
Grand Prix of Trentino, round four of the 2014
campaign] and those small ruts. It was better
today actually than Saturday. In the first race
my start was terrible but I made many positions
and it was not so easy to pass. We carried out
some changes on the bike for the second race and
it helped. I was with the guys right from the
beginning. I was following Van Horebeek with the
same speed and they just pulled away a little bit
as I got tired. Kevin was pushing hard behind me
but when it is a rider like him then you know
there will not be any stupid moves and you can
keep your line. I was able to change things and
pull away to secure the position; that was good.”

Tim Gajser:

“A great GP and to finish on the podium again I’m
really happy. In the first moto I could see my
speed was pretty good and I was able to make some
important passes to get up to seventh¬. In the
second race my start was good actually but I went
a bit wide on the first corner and lost
positions. I pushed as hard as I could to
overtake Butron for fifth just couldn’t manage
it. I want to try and be as near to the top as I
can in the last races and I am starting to get
closer to the top five in the championship.”
