The Grand Prix of Germany at Teutschenthal represented a return to
regular FIM MXGP duty for the old, hard-pack and undulating track
outside the city of Halle almost nine months after the Talkessel
layout had hosted the sixty-seventh Motocross of Nations. Thirty-one
thousand spectators saw Honda celebrate a decent set of podium
finishes in both Grand Prix classes. Honda World Motocross' Max Nagl
classified as runner-up in MXGP with his HRC CRF450F in front of a
noisy home crowd in what was an emphatic return to action from a
broken right scaphoid. In MX2 Tim Gajser graced the rostrum for the
second time this year - and in his career - with a decent second
overall. Clement Desalle (Suzuki) owned proceedings in the premier
MXGP class for what was an overcast and temperate eleventh round of
seventeen in the 2014 campaign, with Jeremy Van Horebeek (Yamaha)
coming home in third.

Nagl was by himself in the Honda awning after Evgeny Bobryshev
underwent surgery this week for the brutal leg smash and double
fracture he sustained at the GP of Italy the previous Sunday. The
crew were glad of Nagl's presence, among a feeling of disbelief at
the misfortune suffered with injuries this term. The 26 year old had
initially planned to be back on the '12' machine at Maggiora but a
small infection in his arm caused a delay until the meeting at
Teutschenthal this weekend. He had been on the sidelines recovering
from a blameless training accident since round four.

Talkessel was not the easiest of racing tracks for the German's
tender joint with its off-cambered and rutty turns and some hefty
jumps. Nagl rode solidly to score third position on Saturday in the
Qualification Heat and was poised for a good day on Sunday.

Raceday dawned cloudy and breezy and in the first moto of thirty
minutes and two laps duration the Honda man astonished his many fans
around the circuit by seizing the holeshot and proceeding to set the
pace. He deflected the attentions of Desalle while in the lead and
jumped past the chequered flag ecstatic with his first Heat victory
since the opening GP in Qatar. Nagl couldn't revel in a repeat of his
getaway for the second moto but rode steadily and safely to gain
positions and register seventh position for his overall ranking of
runner-up. He equalled his career-best result with Honda, posted at
Losail in March.

After six Grand Prix without any points on the board Nagl was content
to restart his 2014 season and admitted that extra meetings in German
and Belgian Championships would be necessary to get back up to full
race trim for the remainder of the international slate. He is eighth
in the MXGP standings and thirty-seven points away from the top five.

Tim Gajser showed fantastic potential on the first day of action by
catching and passing Dylan Ferrandis (Kawasaki) in the MX2
qualification race for a lively second position and his best Saturday
performance of his career so far. The Slovenian had found an
effective groove around the Talkessel 'tramlines' and was set for
another podium shot on Sunday. The teenager took his factory CRF250F
to a pair of commanding but lonely second places behind world
champion Jeffrey Herlings (KTM) to go 'two' across the board for the
weekend and pick up his second trophy after a maiden podium at the
British Grand Prix last month. Frenchman, Jordi Tixier (KTM) placed
third overall today. Gasjer is sixth in the championship standings
with six rounds still remaining and thirty points behind Ferrandis.
Team-mate Kei Yamamoto did not compete as the Japanese is recovering
from a burn to his lower back sustained seven days previously in Maggiora.

After back-to-back fixtures in Italy and Germany the FIM calendar
enters a small break before another double with Grands Prix in Sweden
and Finland occurring on July 6th and 13th.


HONDA COMMENTS:

Max Nagl:

"I don't think anybody, including myself, thought I would be on the
podium here. I always want to come back strong and have the speed to
be at the front because I don't like to be stuck somewhere in the
middle just because I am not fit enough. In the first moto I had a
really good start and was pushing to make my own laps. I was really
consistent. I saw Clement getting closer and I began to be worried
that I would tire but I kept going. I felt so tired afterwards! But
it was really special to do it in front of the home crowd. I used
almost everything I had in the first race and I figured if I won that
moto then it would not matter so much what I did after. I recovered
the best I could in between the motos but I felt tired going to the
gate for the second. Every time you come back from injury you don't
know where you are with your level of fitness and speed and that can
be tricky to deal with mentally. I think I showed today that I am
still fast and strong enough. I have missed testing but I hope we
will catch up and make improvements. We will go weekend by weekend
and also do some other races."

Tim Gajser:

"I'm really happy with both races because I started in third place
both times and then passed Butron to slot into second. Jeffrey was
too fast again today! It feels like the first time that both days at
the GP have been good because I normally have one bad and then
another OK! I am in good shape now and it is getting better and
better every weekend."
