Welland race report

This past weekend the Welland County Motorcycle Club was host to the Dirty Bikes.ca enduro sprint series. A unique opportunity was offered to select pros; the chance to test themselves against others in different disciplines, and ever the one to accept a challenge, Yamaha/Machine Racing’s Brian “Wojo” Wojnarowski was among the off road riders who competed in Saturday’s flat track event, as well as the Extreme race demo Saturday evening.

“It was an interesting experience,” said Wojo about the flat track. “I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I did alright. It was a good time.”

On Saturday, Wojo finished first in the extreme demo and finished mid-pack in 450 and Open Novice flat track. It wasn’t a fire starter performance, but a good showing for the first timer.

The focus was on Sunday’s Enduro Sprint, and with a solid win in Moto 1, the #2 bike looked like he was poised for an overall. “It’s a fun course,” said the Yamaha rider.

But the even best laid plans can fall to waste. In Moto 2 Wojo’s rear tire came off the rim. In 30+ degree heat the tough and stubborn Yamaha rider proceeded to push, pull, and limp his bike through the cross test in order to finish his lap.

Motos 3 and 4 saw Wojo try to regain some time against Nigel Heggarty, who wasn’t going to just let him go. While the #27 Kawi never caught Wojo, the blue rider was unable to recapture the time he lost on Moto 2, finishing sixth overall.

Wojo was, however, titled the best overall rider from the two days. “It was a really fun event,” he said in his speech. “I had a lot of fun, and it was obvious a lot of work was put into the course. The Welland County Motorcycle Club has a good facility. I hope we get to come back here again.”
