2008 International Ride to Work Day

The FIM’s Commission for Leisure Motorcycling (CML) announces that the FIM supports the 2008 International Ride to Work Day activity throughout its nearly 100 member federations worldwide. This event will take place on Wednesday, July 16, although some federations already have run an RTW Day in June to accommodate summer holiday schedules.

The Ride to Work Day event originated in the USA. The event is designed to promote the use of motorcycles for transportation and provide information about transportation-riding to the public. On Ride to Work Day, all motorcyclists are asked to ride their bikes to their place of work to demonstrate that motorcycles serve as a legitimate form of transportation, in addition to being a great source of recreation. The event also showcases the fact that motorcyclists come from all occupations, and the use of motorcycles can help reduce traffic and parking congestion.

“In these days of soaring fuel prices, commuting to work by motorcycle makes great sense,” said Greg Harrison, president of the CML. “While fuel-efficient motorcycles and scooters have been a primary source of transportation for decades in many countries affiliated with the FIM, more and more people around the world are turning to them because they are not only efficient transportation, but fun, too.

“The FIM encourages this trend, and asks that more of its motorcycling federations get involved in providing rider training and programmes for street and leisure riders,” Harrison added.
