Burkhart Victorious at AMA Supermoto in Redmond2007-09-30 09:26Graves Yamaha's Mark Burkhart claimed his fifth victory of the season at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds for round seven of the AMA Supermoto Championship. Rip it Energy Aprilia's Darryl Atkins triumphed in M&R AMA Supermoto Unlimited competition, while Graves Yamaha's Brandon Currie captured his third win of the season and took claim of the points lead in the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites class. HMC KTM's Troy Herfoss, of Australia, grabbed the holeshot to start the AMA Supermoto main event. Burkhart, of Pataskala, Ohio, was following closely in second before making a pass to the lead on the opening lap. Burkhart never looked back and cruised to the victory, giving him a three-point lead over Troy Lee Designs Honda's Jeff Ward in the standings. Ward, of Newport Beach, Calif., eventually moved his way around Herfoss to earn a second place finish. Herfoss put in an impressive ride keeping Burkhart and Ward insight as he rounded out the podium in third place. "I've been working super hard, practicing a lot, and it has really helped me to be able put my head down and ride 110% when the light turns green", remarked Burkhart. "I really like the feeling of winning. I want to thank all the people who have helped to put Yamaha on top". Atkins, of San Clemente, Calif., grabbed the lead after a first-turn pile up claimed several riders. Atkins led all ten laps, picking up his first ever AMA Supermoto Unlimited victory. LA Fuels Husqvarna's David Baffeleuf, of France, finished second while Robert Loire, of Salem, Wis., took third. "This track was great. I think it was even wilder and better than the X-Games.", stated Atkins, "This is the first year for the Aprilia program here in AMA Supermoto and this bike has really been phenomenal. The support we have from Aprilia has been just incredible. I can not wait for the next round in Texas". Troy Lee Design Honda's David Pingree, of Temecula, Calif., jumped to the early lead in the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites feature before a hard crash on the opening lap ended his day. Currie, of Anaheim, Calif., would take over the lead and went on to pick up the victory. LA Fuel Husqvarna's Adam Cini, of San Diego, finished second after holding off a late charge from Monster Energy Kawasaki's Dalton Dimick, of Fort Collins, Colo., who finished third. "I hate to win with David (Pingree) crashing out," replied Currie. "I really liked this track. It was a great setup and nice mixture of surfaces. For sure this was one of the best places I have been to race." AMA Supermoto Race Results 1. Mark Burkhart, Pataskala, Ohio, Graves Motorsports Yamaha 2.
