Ángel Nieto Team rider misses closing stages of second session after clipping the kerb at high speed
The first day of practice at COTA saw the form riders rise to the top in the Moto3 class, with Jorge Martín clocking the fastest lap of the day in a time of 2'17.423, yet still some three seconds off the lap record here. This morning the riders who were first out found the track surface to be still quite dirty following recent works, but they improved by three seconds in the afternoon, with Aron Canet, Fabio di Giannantonio and Marco Bezzecchi also challenging at the top.
In the Ángel Nieto Team garage Andrea Migno's progress was halted by a high-speed crash in the second session. The Italian touched the kerb at one of the faster points of the track and lost the front, and although he escaped unhurt his plans for the rest of the session were scuppered. Migno had finished the first session just over a tenth off top spot in third position. Meanwhile his team-mate Albert Arenas ended the day in 21st position, two seconds off the top, but with some clear ideas on how to close the gap tomorrow.
17th Andrea Migno 2:19.232 (18 laps): “We didn't end the day in the way we would have liked, with a crash that fortunately I was unhurt in, which is the most important thing. We will try to improve in the next sessions. I touched the kerb in one corner and lost the front at high speed. Due to that mistake we weren't able to complete a session we had been fast in. We will try to get back to the front positions tomorrow.”
21st Albert Arenas 2:19.697 (26 laps): “We have the first day at a tough and demanding track under our belts and I enjoyed it. We have to keep working tomorrow because we are still lacking a little but we know where we need to improve and Saturday's sessions will be the moment to do it.”
