This Week in Monster Energy Supercross: Round 13 in St. Louis, MO
. By Bikeland Staff
450SX Class
On Another Level: With his seventh win of the season Eli Tomac became the first rider to win four consecutive Main Events since Ryan Villopoto closed out the 2014 season with four in a row. Only three times in history has a rider won four straight races and failed to win the title (1989, 1992, 2003).
On a Mission: For the first time since the opening round Tomac faces a single-digit deficit to the championship leader after he sat as far as 29 points out of the lead following Round 6. The last time a rider overcame such a large gap was 2002 when Ricky Carmichael fought back from a 35-point deficit to win the title.
Pressure Mounts: In his three previous championship-winning seasons the smallest points lead Ryan Dungey has faced at this point in the season was 12 points back in 2010 when he won the title as a rookie.
As Consistent as Ever: Dungey still boasts a class-leading finishing average of 2.5, with more podium finishes than any other rider this season. He’s also one of just two riders with a top-10 result in all 12 races thus far.
A Tale of Two Starts: The biggest discrepancy between the recent string of results between Dungey and Tomac has been out of the gate. Tomac is enjoying the best starts of his career with a class-leading average of 4.5, improving more than two positions from is career average of 6.7. Dungey’s season average of 5.3 is almost a full position worse than his 4.6 career average.
Positioning is Key: In his 33 career wins Dungey has never started worse than fifth, and has started with the lead in more than half of those victories (58%). He’s started in the top two in 81% of his wins. Tomac’s worst start in 11 career wins was eighth this season in Oakland. He’s started either first or second in all but two of his victorious outings.

Eastern Regional 250SX Class
Dramatic Shift: Detroit saw a swing of 19 points in the championship standings to the benefit of Joey Savatgy, who moved back into the points lead with his third straight runner-up finish. He’ll carry the red number plate for the second time this season.
Nothing to Lose: The casualty of the points swing was Zach Osborne, who suffered misfortune en route to an 18th-place finish. After winning three of five races Osborne now faces a 10-point deficit in the championship, dropping from first to third in the standings. His finishing average fell from 2.2 to 4.8.
Hard-Fought Victory: In addition to becoming the 105th different winner in 250SX Class history, Jordon Smith became the first rider since Ivan Tedesco in 2003 to win the Last Chance Qualifier en route to the Main Event win. Coincidentally, Tedesco’s feat also took place in Detroit (Pontiac Silverdome) and was also for his first career win.
Championship Intrigue: The top four riders in the Eastern Regional title fight are separated by 11 points with just three rounds remaining and the lone championship break coming after St. Louis. Each of these four riders has at least one win this season.
