FYI Deal's Gap: Dragon Closed
May want to find an alternate route if you'rew going through the area any time soon.

Looks like just a couple of rock slides to clean up shouldn't take that long.
Angeles Crest here in So Cal is also closed hope they fix & open for this summer.

Interstate 40 on the TN/NC border near the Gap had a rock slide. major interstate. took forever to repair.
note on this slide they don't even know when they'll start cleanup: " there is not a timeline for repairs to begin at this time"

Sounds like BS red tape dragging on state cleanup funds . Funny that they are willing to pay a few ass hats to guard it 24/7 right away.

I live about 30 miles from Deals Gap.
Rumor around here is that it will be about Aug. before the road is reopened.
I hope not.

The clean up is no big deal according to authorities, the danger of a bigger slide is what's scaring them. We've had so much rain/snow this past winter that slides are everywhere and they don't want someboding driving by a danger area and getting crushed.
That being said..........The Dragon has been a sore spot for quite a while with our Governor and they may dragging their feet on purpose, I dunno.
I'm gonna try a post up a video of a guy driving up onto the slide.......what a piece!

Let me chime in It's ball masseger on the seat, look close in the back ground who elese would hang out with with a bunch of highway guy's 6 if ya look close , not doing a fucking thing , or is it a god damn coffee break , look's weird at best!!

I am glad I got to ride the Dragon and the Tail Of The Dragon back in 05, it was nice riding and we had a good time.

yet in the navy they use "minimum manning" and expect each person to do the work of 4-5 people working 12-15 hour days. Then wonder why we all hate our jobs and retention is decreasing even in the failing economy. One of the officers told me the other day that I was stupid if I didn't re-enlist again in 4 years when I told him that I planned on getting out. I told him that I would rather be poor and happy than slightly less poor and miserable.

March 29, 2010: The rock slide on US 129 is located between the Dragon and Happy Valley Road/Foothills Parkway. US 129 has been closed at the TN/NC State Line by Tennessee making the Dragon itself inaccessable. TDOT has posted a date of July 31 for reopening, but a bonus will be awarded the clean-up if completed by July 1. We will post the latest information here so keep in touch. The only alternatives are the Cherohala Skyway and US 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains. There are many great roads in North Carolina. Use this opportunity to run the Moonshiner28. Watch for weather updates on the Cherohala.
TN 73 Little River Road has reopened. Cades Cove Loop is closed until May 21 for repaving.
