They were inside in the gear cabinet. All helmets boots etc perfect. Just this science experiment festering away. I have no explanation. Just wierd and particularly disgusting.

(a) if the 'gear closet' is in an unheated space like the garage, then you have no control over the humidity either. So you have organic material, moisture and some modicum of heat, which is all that mold and mildew need to thrive.
