The 2nd gen vmax is good I own a modified 1st gen vmax that has Carrillo rods, Ross pistons, mad max undercut tranny, lockup clutch, Dana 3000 ignition and many more useless aftermarket parts on it And it sucks riding down the road over 85 mph because it starts the infamous wobble and stays that way till you get back below 85 I had a wet 50 shot on it and only went 10.60@130 with a DA of 5,400ft with a stock 15" tire and my bone stock 08 zx14 went 9.97@138 with a DA of around 7,300ft I have had the opportunity to ride the 2nd gen vmax during a rally in Ruidoso NM and it handled well for a very heavy bike and also had good low end torque but I will stick with my zx14 it’s much more fun on the street\track.

Yamaha had the right idea in 1985 with the V-Max, problem is they remained unchanged. It was a mean machine back then but remained behind the times in that regard. I still miss mine, one of the few Yamaha's I really liked..

Rather than Google my ass off I'll ask you guys. Back when the Vmax was carbeurated did each cylinder have its own Carb or did a pair of cylinders share one?

they had 4 carbs with a valve below that (so called vboost) that would open to make sure all cylinders got fuel after 5k rpm ..

Both .. The Vboost ... 4 carbs , one for each hole ... At 6000 RPMs a valve below the carbs opened up and all four carbs feed all 4 holes at one time ..

Maybe its because I'm autistic but I don't like constant velocity carbs. The lower left one was unresponsive to throttle app... probably a pierced diaphragm.

I almost bought a Vmax, it's a very cool bike but it's kind of heavy... Still quite impressive, bang for the buck you can't beat a 14

In 1985, Yamaha V-Max first year model, only a few bikes were fuel injected from the factory, Kawasaki Gpz-750 Turbo and the Gpz 1100 among them.

I should have more specific... sorry KO. I don't like "constant velocity" carbs... too damn finicky. My RoadStar came from the factory with a Keihin CVK 40mm unit... which was the same one on my 1995 KLX650... which is the same one on my 2006 Grizzly 660. Christ Almighty! Did they put that carb on everything?
When I put pipes on the RoadStar it really upset that carb. Bought the Dynojet kit... talked to fellas online... countless adjustments to the pilot air screw... tried different pilot air jets... all fruitless.
Went to Patrick Racing's website, bought a Mikuni 45mm flat slide, problems solved.
