take it out of gear or put the kickstand up. Seriously, thats a very common mistake.

Year ?
Battery voltage is XXX . X Volts ?
When the key is turned on do the guages check themselves ?
When the key is turned on does the oil light remain lite ?
If it has an "FI" light does it light up with the key on or does it flash ?
When the key is turned on does the neutral light come on ?
Is the handle bar engine kill switch in the run position ?
Will the bike "bump" start and run ?

there is more but start with these

Yeah there is quite a few scenarios, but always start with the simplest. Because there is probably not a single veteran rider here who can say they have never been at least temporarily dumbfounded when there bike doesnt start when it should, only to find out it was something simple like a kickstand down while in gear or kill switch accidentally flipped.

If it starts and runs via bump starting or jumping the starter motor then you have a start circuit problem.
Haveing a manual with a wiring diagram would HUGE here
BUT basically you need to electrically check everything as there are several parts in the start circuit that can go wrong. The side stand and the clutch lever switches are extremely common failures.
Without a wiring diagram I am just thinking out loud :P
If you were in BC I would just ride over there fix it then take ALL your beer :P
