03/04 ZX-6 ECU falls to the Hackers

Some of you may have seen my thread in the ZX-12 forum about reflashing the ZX-12 ECUs. During research for that project I noticed some similarities between the Busa and ZX-12 ECUs which led me to find that you could also hack the older 16 bit Busas too. This attracted the attention of a guy in Finland with a 2006 32bit Busa determined to hack his. Soon this spread and we had a guy in Australia hacking a 2007 SV-1000, a guy in germany doing a Z1000 and and the Finn.

A guy here in the states who builds 636 powered midget racers caught the bug and using techniques developed by these other guys successfully hacked a 21175-001 32bit ECU out of a 2004 ZX-6 and downloaded the code and maps.

It turns out the 32 bit Densos are even easier to program than the 16bits used by the ZX-12 and TL1000Rs. They require only a simple 232 to ttl converter box. You do not need to cut into the ECU to program it. You do need to cut open one example to pull out the code. But once you have the code for that model of ecu you can use it to reflash other bikes with the same model ecu that haven't been cut open.

I'll keep you informed and post maps and etc as they become available.

great read - but for those who aren't ECU experts such as myself, can I ask what good is it to hack it? you get the factory map settings, or one can avoid having a bike mapped?

By hack I mean read and reflash it. In simple terms it means you will be able to do everything you can do with a Kit ECU, and more, for $20 bucks of hardware and free software. Change the ignition timing, rev limits, fuel maps, remove any speed restriction, secondary throttle plate restriction etc.

No more power commander, ignition module, tre etc.

Oh, and not to mention dual maps. Two complete sets of maps that are selectable thru the wire harness. One for street, one for racing. NOS/ no NOS. One for noise-smog compliance, one for fun.

Its early days yet. But we are getting there...

As far as I know the ZX-14s still use the Mitsubishi ECUs. We have had no luck with those so far.
