New steering ECU programming
I just finished rebuilding an '08 Connie. One of the pieces that needed replacing is the steering ECU. I understand that the steering ECU needs to be programmed to talk to the rest of the system and took it to my local Kawasaki dealership. The tech there admitted that he has never done this before but assured me that he could do it. I received a call today that the could do the programming because he didn't have the right "mechanical key" for the steering lock. He said that the mechanical key is need to turn the bike on, but my understanding is that it is only used for gas and luggage locks.
I never received a mechanical key with the steer lock. Do you know anyway around this?

There is a spare mechanical key in the fob. The tech is correct it has a key with a big head that stays in the ignition you can't remove it unless it is in the FSS position.

Ted... Thanks for the reply. I have the original mechanical key that came with the bike...but had to buy a new top triple tree/ignition switch.
I'm wondering if there is a way to just switch the steering electronics and be able to keep the original ignition key.

You might be able to take it to a locksmith. The keys are numbered and although hindsight is so clear, you may have been able to order a switch keyed with that number.
