It is still the latest from Garmin and will probably be their flagship piece for some time to come.

550 is the best and most expensive. but 660 is second best and looks better IMHO.
I've got my money's worth out of my 2006 550 and then some.

Best place to get a 550? I have a Garmin Street Pilot, works fine just Big unit. Better
for Marine or auto.

I have the 550 on FBA's recommendation and like it very much, and I like that I have the car cradle as well. The one and only thing I don't like is that the bluetooth is not stereo. But other than that it had logged about 40,000 miles and made my trips much more enjoyable.

550 is going away by spring and they will offer a much lower priced model based on a current platform in another line they have now. The 660 will remain as the flagship piece, Though the 550 costs more now, it is technically the higher end of the two current models. Rather than lower the cost of the 550, they left it as a straggler - sales on it are basically NIL now as the 660 has become the go-to piece now. A new f/w was just released for the 660 giving it more functionality and fixing a lot of the plaguing issues. The 550 is an excellent unit, but has been around for 3 years already...and in the electronics world, 3 years is a century, as we all know. The 660 dropped XM services, but works with the new free traffic services, if you add the traffic receiver, which Garmin felt was a better choice for bikers. I wish it had weather too, a very useful thing - but I'd bet we'll see a connected unit like the Nuvi 1690, with all of the services, not just weather and traffic.

yeah this 550 enjoyed a product life cycle a LOT longer than I ever would have imagined.
I bet folks will be getting some SWEET closeout deals too.
My car mount for mine finally gave. fvck it, I'll keep using my 550 on the bikes till someone steals it or it breaks (which is doubtful)!

my friend had to replace his from the pins on the bottom cause he lets it out side and the rubber cover broke so it is in the weather and the pins exposed.

In looking through the threads as I research a GPS, figured that I'd give you guys a heads-up that Garmin now has a Zumo model 665. Latest/greatest, apparently. Stereo Bluetooth, built in XM radio, and Weather and Traffic available (via XM) as well:
"The zūmo 665 comes standard with our GXM™ 40 XM antenna. Simply add an optional XM subscription and receive real-time XM Radio® with 170 digital channels of commercial-free music, news, sports, talk and entertainment when you travel in the U.S. With the addition of XM NavWeather®, you can access up-to-the-minute weather data and NEXRAD radar graphics from your map screen to stay ahead of the storm. Plus, when you add on XM NavTraffic®, you can find out where the trouble spots are and route around them."
Link:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=135&pID=65203
MSRP is $999.00 , but I'm gonna start looking to see what they're going for, online.
If anyone has one, I'd love to hear what you think of it
Take care,
Michael

Speaking of the Garmin, I have the 550 and it is a great unit except for the mono bluetooth mp3 player. But J&M makes a dongle that not only takes the stereo jack output and transmits bluetooth but it also takes the output of a radar detector and transmits it also.
I was wondering if anyone has tried this? FBA??? It is pricy but I need to get a decent radar detector transmitting to my helmet. Then I can set up the Garmin to do the navigation and phone through one channel to the helmet and music and radar to the other.

Thanks Steve,
I think I am going to give them a call and make sure it will do what I want. It does sound like what is needed. I really need the radar input.

I get the part about the radar input. The other option would be the "mixer" style units - where you could technically combine many inputs and assign priority to each one, based on input type. One of the big ones is Autocom...and they have what you are looking for, albeit not cheap.
