I think I killed my c14

Today I decided to take a ride and about 80 miles from home coming out of a corner at 100+ I hammered it and it felt weak, I downshifted and it was weak so I slowed down and the engine was making a noise like I blew a spark plug and was running on 3 cylinders. Crap. Now I noticed that the voltage has gone to about 12 volts and the battery is no longer charging. This is a clue. Anyway I nurse it gently to civilization to get cell phone service and the battery was dead but I was able to push it to a gas station and call home for them to come get me. I got my trailer and got the bike. But I think it is hurt bad.
So there is a clue in there, no charging but enough voltage to run and start. Bad noise and running on 3 cyls. This is a test.

Ted, good thing for warranty. Any codes pop up?

It was obviously running on the battery for a while. Alternator dead?

Mileage?

Good luck.. Look forward to hear what they find.

Nope, not a code to be had. The Alternator is dead but the bike is making a bad noise. So what drives the alternator? Noise, only running on three cyls and no charging. What does that point to?
Damn straights about that warranty. I may just get an 09 and trade this one in.

Ted, you may get better feedback on the other forum . I haven't researched the service manual to see what drives what, but believe it's either chain or gear driven (take that with a grain of salt, not 100% sure).

How many miles on the bike?

Let me give you a hint. The end of the crank. I am trying to get you guys to come to the same conclusion as me.

If you managed to bust your crank, you've got problems .

Hmm... Lots of bizarre problems popping up lately for folks. See the pics of the guy that busted his handle bars? The stupid brake recall, etc...

I do think it is a busted crank. At first I thought it was a blown spark plug. But the system not charging made me think a bit more about it.

....ok...I put my left-hand screwdriver down...per the Kawasaki parts diagram, the alternator assembly is directly connected to and driven off of the left side of the crankshaft...KABOOOM-SHAKALAKALAKA!!!....something catastrophic happened on the left side of the crankshaft with the #1 rod, bearings, piston, etc.?....something broke or became loose which caused the alternator to stop alternating and the piston to stop pistoning...maybe the left side of the crankshaft was fubar'd for reason(s) that have yet to be determined?....

Oh my friggin' god Ted, that is just plain weird. I thought almost all modern bike engines like this used forged billet cranks, they shouldn't crack... I mean I have seen a lot of cast car cranks crack, but not forged...
Geez,
Good luck!

We will see. I am thinking about trading it in no matter what and get an 09. I am pretty sure I want an ABS model this time out.
So here is the story, the Kwak shop just moved into their new building and their warehouse is not yet done. So their space is tight. BUT when I went to drop off my crippled bike I get this from the salesman/manager: “Because it is you we will take it now, usually you need an appointment” , where I replied: “Are you kidding me????” I then proceeded to remind him that anyone with a broken bike that is under warranty needs to be accommodated or they will hesitate ever buying another bike from you and we hashed that around for a while. Before that we talked about trading in my bike now matter what and they were open to the idea. There are only two colors available, a dark metalflake red and a black metalflake. I don’t like the red so that leaves black.

Are you still sitting cross legged on the floor of the temple? You are too old to be sitting there that long, go home. Hookers? Let me see.... money pit, rental snatch, rental mouth, rental fun bags, rental...... you get the drift. But all in all, less expensive than a wife. Hell for that matter less expensive than keeping tires on my bikes.

Looks like Andy will have something to do. I was there on Friday for the rear brake pedal recall, the shop was dead. Maybe one too many wheelies on Diamond Valley Road?

That is were I was when it failed. I rolled by the old fire station and hit that corner at close to 100, climbed the hill hit the left hander and got to approx 135ish on the straight, did the left sweeper and came out of the right hander at about 100ish and went to accelerate in front of the farm house. I can usually hit 125ish at the top of the hill. That is where is blew, right where I hammered it in front of the farm house.

That is why the C14 has a slipper clutch, no issues. I can go a lot faster on that same stretch of road on my ZX10, a lot faster, it has a slipper clutch also.
That did happen to me at the San Jose half mile, the engine seized right as I was going into turn 3 and the next thing I know I am sliding on my hands and knees and I am watching my bike go end over end disintegrating in slow motion before my eyes. I was sliding so fast and things seemed so slow I thought I stopped. I lifted my hands and I still was going fast and I started to go end over end, disintegrating.

Just spoke to the Kwak shop. They charged it up and they think it is a main bearing or a broken crank. They will dive into it tomorrow. One way or another it is hurt bad.

I don't see how it could be a main bearing, a rod bearing would usually fail first (the one furthest from the oil supply), and it shouldn't effect the alternator. I am in on the crank theory, But even that is a hard one to believe, there would have to have been a serious defect in the material like a gas bubble or something, or if was not forged correctly in that area. It also probably would have broken pretty cleanly vertically, if not, I am sure it did more damage as the radial forces would push the end outwards under a lot of pressure. Also it is possible it whacked the valves on that cyl.
Let us know (sure you will).... Is this another recall to be???

Reguards,
Rob
