Fuel Economy Map vs. Full Power Map?

I ordered my PC3 today and was asked if I want the Full power map or the fuel economy map preprogrammed into it. I opted for the full power to start with, but Fuel Moto told me I can download the other whenever I would like.

I will be also installing an Area P carbon fiber exhaust, BMC air filter, and removing the flies.

Is anyone running the fuel economy map? How does it compare to the full power map in terms of power vs. mpg?

Thanks,
Drew

Drew,
I just got my bike last week, and I may be asking you how this is all done. I would be interested in doing it at some point later this year.

What made you choose the Area P exhaust and BMC air filter, as opposed to others?

You can unlock the power this bike is capable of with these mods, the power kawi didn't want you to have, so you don't hurt yourself. I like taking chances and this mod for me was incredible. The exhaust and air filter type are mostly personal preferences, the maps for the flies out are not dependant on the air filter, and possibly not even the type of slip on as well.

I chose a 2 bros carbon fiber slip on as I think it looks great on the bike, but it's my own opinion. They said the difference between al the exhaust choices were 1-2 hp. It's a mod for the power junkie..

Steve,
I went with the area p for several reasons. It is a small family owned company, but the owner has worked for many of the top exhaust manufacturers and has a wide variety of experience to work from. I've read great reviews for not only their performance, but also the customer service. I've read some posts from the owner of the company on this and other forums. It really sounds like they want to keep their customers happy. Area P will also repack the muffler free of charge after so many miles I believe.

In addition, the sound is relatively low and not too loud. I really don't want to draw any more attention to this bike than I already will with these performance upgrades. I bought all this from FuelMotoUSA.com and they personally dyno test each bike model with each exhaust and filter combination they sell and make the appropriate MAPs for them. They report this combination is the best, so we'll see.

Great, thanks for the info guys. Sounds like Area P is a good way to go, I've traditionally gone with Muzzys for my old Kwaks but perhaps it's time for a change...

I'd like to do these mods over the winter, the other question I have is how would they affect the factory warranty? Not used to buying a brand spanking *new* bike, so I'm not used to warranty concerns!

To answer the original question about pwr vs economy maps…..
I’ve used both. The economy map will get you maybe 5 mpg more at hwy speeds 60 – 80mph.
It's the same as the full pwr map except for a fuel reduction of 8 only in the 5-40% throttle and 1500 to 4250 rpm range.
When ya wanna go fast you’re not really in that reduced fuel range so you’d be hard pressed to notice any less power.

Thanks WG.

So does the fuel economy map negate to a small degree what i'm trying to accomplish in the first place by removing the flies for better low rpm power? I realize everything is a trade off though.

Not at all really. Flies out gives you a LOT more air and fuel at lower rpm’s and just a tad less fuel won’t be noticeable. Plus as soon as you’re over 40% throttle you’re back to the power maps settings and if you’re not over 40% throttle, you’re not asking for much power. I have a multiport hub on my PC3 which allows you to switch maps on the fly and the way I ride, I could not tell any difference in power when you asked for it.

as you may see I originally claimed to feel a little more power from the power map but I’m going to flip-flop on that now and say I was just imagining it.

Well, i couldn't wait any longer to tear into those flies, so last night when I got off work around 3am, i started tearing off the plastic, the tank, the muffler can, and the flies. It went real smoothe. I just took my time, had a few beers, and had fun. For the flies, i used a regular size ratcheting screwdriver with a 4" extention, and a 446-2X hex bit that I got working at the airlines. Used that for all 8 screws, steady even pressure.

Now just waiting for UPS to get the goods. Should be here tomorrow!

Here's a few pics so far of the project:

difference between a craftsman #2 and the 446-2X hex bit I used. If you do a search for these bits you can find them for about a buck or less.

Steve-
Got everything done last weekend and I'm very impressed with it! I definateley have a lot more low end power and it revs up a lot faster now. The area p sounds good. it's not loud, just sounds low and tough wihout being obnoxious.

Great, thanks for the update. I'm going to get through break-in and then probably follow the same path you have. Might be PMing you on the flies-out procedure...

Feel free Steve, I'd be glad to help as are most of the folks on this forum. Oncourse was my coach for it. I gotta go try to adjust my exhaust to saddlebag clearance though. It's almost touching.
