Oil slightly overfull, will it hurt?

Hi!

I did an engine oil and filter change and filled it with 4.7 quarts like the service manual says. At home on the centerstand the oil level came to to full mark.

I rode it to work this morning and now the oil level is above the full mark. I'm not sure if it's a case of the ground not being level at home or here but I'm going on a ride tomorrow and I won't have a chance to drain any before then.

If it is overfull it would only be slightly, maybe .2 or .3 of a quart. Is this enough to cause the horror stories I've heard about running engines with the oil levels to high?

Thanks!

Leif

A couple of things happen with an overfill. Windage is one where the crankshaft has to plow through more oil and robs HP. Also that causes more oil to vaporize and the PCV system will suck up more of those fumes and deposit them in the air cleaner. Yada yada.

Yes, I know what can happen when the oil is over the full mark. I was just trying to get an idea of how much over the full mark before you start to have problems. My common sense tells me slightly over the full mark should be okay and I was just trying to get verification.

The good news is the concrete pad I had my bike parked on at work was not level, you just can't tell with the naked eye. After moving the bike to a known level area the oil level was fine.

I'm riding up to Bikeweek in Laconia NH today...woohoo!!

I found the easiest way to remove any over fill is to use a small plastic tube fitted to a syringe obtainable from a chemist and feed it down through the oil filler hole. Make sure the plastic pipe is tight on the syringe, you don't want to have to fish the tube from the engine

You might have issues if you put in a quart too much and ran it at high rpms, ortherwise it should just blow out your breather.
