Mailman came today, Bye Bye Flies!!
I finally got the PC3 this morning, thank god I ordered it when I did, and thanks Fuel Moto for prompt shipping. I am going to explain my doing the connie over below...
Friday I went to sears to look at screwdrivers, you cannot believe how many differences there are even within the same screwdriver! Some blades were thicker, some razor sharp, bad quality control. Even in the professional line... After a while of me looking at a bunch the manager came over and asked what I was up to and I showed him the differences, even he could not believe it. I picked what I thought was the best 8" #2 out of 20.
With 20/20 hindsight, I can honestly say I do not reccomend this to a novice, Yes I am an auto tech, not a bike tech, but there are a lot of similarities. I really did not know what I was in for, and there was no turning back either.
First was the pc3, the instructions were pretty good and I got the jist of it. Removing what I had to to get to everything I needed for that project was supplied by the owners manual. The biggest problem was getting the FI plug undone from the main harness on the bike. It is buried, and is in very tight. I finally got her out, pulling and pulling, it came out.
Next was to mount the pc3, pretty easy, ran the wire down with no problem. The Largest problem was getting the dang plug back into the FI harness, it just would not go in using a big flat screwdriver. I finally forced my hand in there and squeezed it together with a lot of force and bleeding from the cut I got from the TB boot clamps which they sharpened real well at the factory!
The PC3 was in, next was to get to those damn circular metal things, and the service manual really did not help. I had to just improvise, propping the tank up far enough to get accsess. Then took a big breath of ait, seeing the restrictors for the first time and also praying it would all turn out ok...
I stuck the #2 in and got it on the screw, the easiest one I could find, and low and behold it did not fit right!!! I know when a driver and screw meet well, done it a million times. I then grabbed a #1 and it was too loose. Trust me, just looking at the screws, they are not #2. Thinking of what I could do, I decided that the #1 would fit better with modifications. So I ground off about .020 or so off the tip. Cleaned it up and stuck it in, fit like a glove!
Since it was not a long #1, it fit completely in the frame and I used robogrips to grip the driver. I pushed down on the driver and grabbed the driver with the robogrips (had no vise grip) and turned and low and behold it broke loose. Now these screws do not just turn easily even after they are broke free, using the long #2 I got it out, even though the #2 was slipping on the head.
Next one, I guess either I had the wrong angle on it or something, thought it broke loose, but not! I looked down the intake and it was somewhat rounded off. Pondered in anguish (few appropriate words as well) and decided the tank needs to come off, no matter what!
Now the service manual really did not do me much help here, basically said disconnect the fuel pump connector and disconnect the fuel level sensor plug and remove the fuel line. Here is what you need to know, first disconnect the 2 vent hoses at the rear of the tank, then remove the front 2 bolts on the front of the tank, then the rear 2, get something to prop the front of the tank up about 8", you should be able to get the fuel line off the rear of the tank from the right side. Then get a helper to lift the rear and pull the connectors for the FP and Level sensor out the left side and disconnect them. Remove tank.
Since I had already removed the 2, 3 bolt plates, I did not have to do it again, but you need to remove them now. Now You can see all the plates, and the one I screwed up. With clean line of sight (except the outer 2) I went to work with my special made screwdriver and had no issues. The outer 2, which you cannot get directly straight on with a long screwdriver, was no issue, as my modified #1 could fit completely in the frame. All I did was push the plates partially open to get an angle where I could go straight on it, and with the robogrips grabbing the screwdriver, they were not an issue.
What I was left with was that stripped screw. I stuck a #2 in it, and it just did not fit, my modified one did, but had some play. I was one screw away from heaven or hell..... I then took a break, got some more work oil, and a smoke. Refreshed LoL, I put the modified driver on the screw, pushed hard and turned the robogrips and it came free!!!! All flies out, oh yeah, oh yeah!
Put the bike together and there she sits, didn't even fire it up yet. I also want to mention that before I did the flies I backed off the idle adjustment 3 turns just to make sure they were all the way closed. Then cleaned up the junk that fell with long q tips with a little oil on the tips.
So, in USA terms, the screwdriver is a 1.5 phillips. I have #2 screws (japanese) in my car and the #2 fits well, not these screws... Hopefully when it fires (it better) I will have the nirvana I have been looking for...

Took my flies out today as well and added a PC3 and Holeshot exhaust. I'm very happy with the results!! Bike runs much better unrestricted. Can't wait to get some more riding in.

Update,
I was going to take a nap after doing this whole ordeal, layed in bed for 1 hr, never fell asleep... In the back of my mind a demon was lurking, I never started it.... Would it start?
One way to find out, got up and dressed, grabbed the fob and headed out to my shop. I pushed te key down and let the fuel pump do it's job, well I did that 2x. She fired right up and was idling high. I figured that since I backed the idle off I may not have put it back where it was, so I backed off the idle springy thingy and it did nothing. I then forced the throttle grip towards idle and it went down to like 700rpm's. I knew I did not tangle any wiring in the throttle body that would interfere with the throttle cable. The culprit, and thank god it was an easy fix, was that when I ran the PC3 harness it interfered with the idle adjuster, kinda pinching it. Just rerouting it fixed everything. I now have my idle at 1100, it used to always be 1400 (kinda weird) and used to idle in 1st gear at 10 mph.

Ok, went for the first ride today with the flies out, and MAN I gotta tell you it is the difference between a 4 cyl and 8 cyl car. The thing leaps forwards like I never knew it could, just short shifting at 4k with 1/4" throttle or so, I think I hit 60mph in 5 sec's.
I was lucky enough to meet Jailcop about 30 miles from where I Live and we had a good time, compaing bikes etc..
This thing is night and day from where it was before the PC3 and fly removal it is sick, totally holligan sick! I mean if it was broken in (only have 340 miles) I would get arrested.
Thanks for all the input on removing them, and the story holds true, it is amazing the difference. If you haven't done it or had it done, what are you waiting for???
The only downside, the throttle is touchy, as in if you hit an expansion joint in the road and your wrist moves on the throttle it will surge insantly, there is no delay. And now I believe what FBA said about flipping the bike, I am sure it is real easy to do, time will tell....

I think there's a small learning curve, after which you should be fine.
The throttle is more responsive, but once you get used to it, it's nothing to worry about IMO. The low speed throttle response is still very precise and not twitchy at all.

Smoother, I think it is, then again I haven't gone over 4k rpm, idles like a v8 lexus.
What I really notice, besides the seat of the pants, night and day difference, is the ram air growl. WOOOOMMMMM. Things just happen way quick, 1/4" or so of throttle and only going to 4k, you do not have much time between shifts, you are gone.. Numbers cannot describe what it does. There is an authority to it that just makes the stock bike seem way lame.
As far as low speed throttle response goes, yes it is precise, what I would worry about is being on something slick in 1st at about 3k and hitting a bump causing me to inadvertantly blip the throttle.

Rob, you should be a writer! Great description!
I know what you mean though. Even on my 1800vtx, after I put a hypercharger pipes and computer on it, it would really kick just going over rr tracks and the like.
I can only imagine on this beast!
Really, great write up.

Actually mine were very easy because GTR_1965 did mine for me. He pulled the flies, mounted PC3 and exhaust all in just over an hour. My fly screw came out very easily after using seafoam to loosen the lock tight.

break in, I usually do a progressive one. One that will have me at or near redline by 1000 miles, so at 400 miles I will go to 5k, and every 100 after that I will go up 1k. Really, with the flies out, you do not need more than 4k, unless you wanna loose your licence quick... Yeah, I only can do near 85mph now, but it get's there fassstttt!

For your money, there is no other mod that delivers what this mod does... Usable every day, and reusable as well. Make your big bore feel like a big block, which is what it should be... No need revving to the outer limits, use the torque and say bye bye....
If you have a big bore bike, with VVT is a plus, why not take advantage of it...

1 mpg better so far, guess it just depends on how you run it. I am geting near 42 now, vs. 41. The more power in this range might make you wanna twist it more, hence a possible mpg decrease.

Rob,
In a previous thread when FBA did his flies, he said:
"As far as all the noise about buzz goes, it's only a tad buzzy in the lower gears; when you're in 5th and 6th at cruising speeds at those same "buzzy" RPM's, you don't feel anything worth discussing."
Have you noticed any low end buzz since you pulled your flies?

I only go to 4k, but will have enough miles on it this weekend to go to 5k. I didn't notice any difference so far, there is a low end growl it always had (below 2k), but no buzzing to speak of in the rpm range I am running, just makes everyday riding much better and more fun. It has improved power in every gear given my light throttle, You can even see/feel the difference in OD as well.

Yeah it hurts, but it is costing me a lot of money and I am a tech, I would have a hard time sleeping if I abused my biotch during break in...
It must be killing you, to live with the flies and that boat anchor
Don't forget, if craftsman makes a 8" #1 it would be the best driver to modify, you can get straight on the outer 2 screws, which you will never do with a number 2...

LOL!
Seriously though, I'm starting to now understand what you all mean. The bitch is really fast when you get it up in the revs, but down low it really does feel just like a 600. Although I'm getting much better at the power chop wheelies, and damn is that fun! I think it does em better on 89 octane though.
Rob, did you heat up the screws at all to loosen the loctite prior to removal?

No need to heat them, that driver would take even a stripped head screw right out. The long modified #1 will fit right in the frame hole straight down to the outer 2, wish I would have had the long one, it would have been so much easier. Just force and turn, using pliars or a small vise grip on the screwdriver handle helps a lot. Any junk that falls down you can clean up with long q-tips, as the primary flies are closed.
I wouldn't run 89 with the flies out...
Temptation???
