Engine Ice?

Has anyone used Engine Ice or similar products? Is it more for racing or does it help in summer traffic too?

What is the best coolant? Plain water, problem is it provides no protection for the cooling system, and provides no freeze protection. Nascar and many race circuits run just water, but you are not talking long term, 1 day of racing is one day, not years.

What you could do is reduce the amount of antifreeze in your system. Maybe instead of the average 50-50 wich protects down to about -34, you might want to reduce the mixture to maybe 70-30 (water/antifreeze).

Do not forget that the antifreeze has lubrication properties and anti corrosion inhibitors that plain water just does not have. The only type of water to use is distilled water. Distilled water has NO minerals in it, any minerals will be collected and deposited in the cooling system. In the radiator, or engine.

Ps: I hope I did not overcomplicate this one...

Nope, not overcomplicated at all! The how's and why's are the good stuff. Thanks again Rob! I'm an aircraft mechanic/inspector by trade, so I get the basics, but I just never got much into reciprocating engines, mostly jets.

Still very much a newbie with bike mechanics though, but I'm not afraid to learn!

I currently use engine ice in my C14. I previously used it in my ZX12R. I don't notice any difference but I haven't used a thermometer or anything to measure if there's a difference. I can say that when cruising I usually only show two bars on my temp guage, the first one at the bottom and the one that's two below halfway, and I live in FL where it's always hot! I changed the antifreeze out with the first oil change and I also run fully synthetic oil so like I said don't know if it really makes a difference. I also didn't notice a difference on the 12 when I used it. That temp guage would stay around the halfway mark and go to 3/4 in traffic.
