Possible new owner questions

So I am looking for a replacement tourer for my BMW F650cs and went to Valley Cycles in Winchester VA today to look at the GTR1400. Nice bike and it even has a centerstand... Which bikes have centerstands in todays world anymore?!?! Very pleasant surprise.

However the sales dude Peter wasnt really much of a help as he didnt know what he was talking about and just randomly came up with excuses to leave. According to him the valves are self adjusting.. is this true? Also he wasnt sure whether the rear LED can be changed to flashing mode or not with the switch of a pin. He said that the brakelight would have to be replaced. There was also a used 08 with 580miles on the salefloor that was advertised for sale. The ignition was on for 2mins and he turned it off mentioning that he battery would be drained so there was no way for me to take a look at the board computer.. anyways they wont get my business it seems.

Here are my questions:

Has anyone added heated grips to their bike? I do commute in the winter all the time and heated grips a completely must have for a touring bike in my opinion. No idea why Kawasaki chickened out on them on a tourer.

Can the rear LED light be changed to flashing when applied? I do like the attention grabbing mode whether it helps or not.

What is the shaking that everyone is talking about?

Do the valves have to be adjusted at all or are they self adjusting like mentioned by the salesmen?

Anyone else done the dual HID conversion? I was actually looking all over the bike today for options to mount the ballast and then found the hid conversion post which confirmed my idea of the ballast placement.

What is the changing interval on the rear final drive fluid? i saw in the post with the maintenance schedules a mileage indicator but no description of whether it needs to be changed or just checked.

Are there two air filters or just one? What is the cost per air filter?

Last but not least: I got quoted 842$ through Progressive for full coverage for myself. What are you guys paying?

Thanks for any answers you guys might have!

Lots of people have but in my opinion if you need them you'd be much better off with heated gloves as the top of your hands are in the wind.

I Dunno

What is the shaking that everyone is talking about?

I Dunno I've only heard of a few one time instances of high speed wobble in turns at about 120 MPH

They have to be adjusted. Did the salesman point out the unusual red headlight and dual white taillights too?

Yes several have done that..

Change at 600 then each 12000 miles.

One and about $45.00

I wish I were only paying that much.

Thanks for any answers you guys might have!

You can make the rear tail light flash, but you'll need to incorporate a third party module for that function. You can also build one yourself.

I pay about $450 a year for full coverage through geico. I have 250 deductibles with 25/50K in liability requirements. I'm tossing the idea of bumping up accessory coverage to 2K over what they offer initially (|$500). thats another $50/yr.

34 yr old single male, suburb of chicago.

Heated gloves make sense too, but is there a pair out there that's not bulky enough to give good control feel?

Advise your salesman to adjust the valves in his head.. Apparently not enough oxygen is getting in.

I always had heated grips and can't really imagine to get wires hanging from my gloves. There is a dealer locally that has an 08 Abs for 12.199$ on the floor. I will take a look at that one.

Congrats on the new bike! I just got mine yesterday and loving it so far.

As far as insurance rates:

I'm single, 32 and paying $534/yr. full coverage with geico in savannah, ga. That's the only vehicle on the policy, so no multi-vehicle discount there. The vtx1800 i had was 400 bucks/yr. Considering they wanted over $1500/yr for a zx-10, i'm pleased with that rate. Oh and i have a clean driving record too.

I got a ticket just by gently accelerating and shifting at 3000 rpm. That is faster than 55 and I didn't even realize I was speeding. So you really have to pay attention.
