GPS???
I have been looking for a GPS system and with a small amount of research the Garmin zumo 550 seems to be the hot item for a bike. I read a few comments and someone was complaining about it's lack of compass and altimeter and it seems they addressed that in a software upgrade. Then I remembered FBA's comment that went something like he was a bad judge of GPS in some thread. What was that about?

I vaguely remember that but can't find it. The Zumo is great though. I sure like mine.

Ted, the Zumo 550 has all that. It's entirely made for bikes...it's simple and easy to use, with 200,000 track points for 30,000 mile trips, without thinking about downloading your trip logs...advanced routing with the ability to add up to 50 waypoints in a planned route...
BTW, it always had a compass and altimeter, but some people just don't know how to use them.
Non-fade-easy-to-read-won't wash out in direct sunlight display. (very bright)
It's good for 1 hour under 1 meter of water (IPX07 rated), can be mounted on the C14 using just the parts in the box and 2 replacement riser bolts,Bluetooth, MP3, etc...

We sell them by the truckload - they're great units, with significantly better North American mapping than the TomTom Rider. Best of all, the UI is so intuitive, it needs no manual to use out of the box.

I cheaped out and got the 450 because I wasn't interested in Bluetooth and now wish I had the 550 just for the included car mount and spoken street names. That and about $150 are the only differences between the two.
The mapping software is also very cool. You can build custom back road routes on your computer, send them to the Zumo and follow them precisely to the middle of nowhere and back.
Add a 2 gig SD card and you can load a ton of music, even audio books.

Actually, you can do the custom road thing right on the Zumo itself; it's just longer to do and not as intuitive, but it's do-able nevertheless.

I had a Zumo on my C14. Swapped it the SP 2730 on my KLR. I like the more customizable screen on the 2730. The Zumo is fine and does pretty much everything you would want, but I like being able to see speed, altitude distance to go and distance to turn all at the same time. Maybe I'm too ignorant, but I could not get all that info plus a map on the Zumo at the same time.

Uh no -- 10 yr old technology, no SirfStarIII GPS chipset, no battery, duller, fade-in-direct-sun LCD...a boat anchor...
FWIW --
Yes the map screen is more configurable than a Zumo, but offers no overall benefit and NO BLUETOOTH. Has XM, but that can be added to the Zumo as well.
Oh one more thing -- the 2730 has been discontinued 2 years ago...I forgot to mention that I guess...:P

I know the 2730 has been discontinued, I bought this one several years ago. Don't care about the lack of a battery, and the technology works for me/

Like everyone I have my own opinion and the 2730 suits my needs better on my long distance bike. (heck, my wife has an SP III on her ST.) Not having Bluetooth is no loss because it won't transmit the XM signal. I won't use my phone on a bile, they are my escape from cell phones.
I believe the 2820 and 2830 replaced the 2730.

Okay back to the Zumo. In the last 2 days I have put on about 600 miles and I could have used it several times. But even with the GPS you still need a paper map to pick a destination. Too hard with a GPS kinda need the bigger picture.

You can use the Garmin (or someone else's) map on your PC to pick a destination, although I've been known to print out paper maps from Streets.
Good catch on the 2830. Sometimes I let my brain wander too far afield.

Ted if you have an address, intersection or name of town you can type it into the Zumo and it will take you there by your choice of shorter distance or faster time. And it will draw the route for you on its map. You can also enter coordinates or pick a spot on the map. So you don't need a paper map at all and like I said, you can build custom back road routes on your computer, send them to the Zumo and follow them precisely to the middle of nowhere and back. Steve also pointed out that you can build these rout on the Zumo, but I've never done that. It also has a plethora of known locations such as restaurants, gas, lodging entertainment, etc, etc. including casinos!

The Zumo also comes with MapSource, the mapping software for your PC.. Routes and waypoints can be created and downloaded from MapSource to your Zumo.

You guys missed my point, I have a factory GPS that came with my Vette, even the directions appear on the HUD, I am very used to using one. I had a portable stolen by TSA right out of my bag.
Think about it this way, it is Saturday morning and you are thinking to yourself, Where am I going to go today? So you take out the paper map and look for an interesting destination. Yes you could do it on an 3.5 inch screen but a paper map is a much better way to go. Once you have figured out where you are going then the GPS is the ticket, and the paper map is put away.

Yes Ted, I missed your point completely. Still MapSource works as the big picture for me as long as I'm near my computer. I don't even have a paper map. Perhaps I should get one.

Ah yes, but the C14 is so comfy I need to go further, so again the paper will come out, close my eyes and put my finger on the map and go there. But I need a GPS to actually figure out were I am and how to get home
Really I missed a turn Saturday and it was getting late and a GPS would have been awesome and the missed turn would not have happened. I finally made Auburn at sunset which is 100 miles away from Reno, which put me on top of Donner Pass way later than one wants to be up there during winter.
